A nice, close, easy peak to climb. Not isolated like some, but boasts an impressive view. Saw some mountain goats not but 10 yards off the trail--they didn't seem too worried about us. If only it were hunting season.
Climbed Grays first and then traversed to Torreys. Very well maintained trail with lots of signs. Many other hikers for a Monday. Must be really busy on a summer weekend.
We started at around 6:30 and summitted around 9:00 AM. Beautiful day, no clouds, but it was rather windy. We just managed to beat the crowds which began pouring up the slopes as we descended. Great climb!
had a great day on the mountains, great scenery and wildlife and not too crowded.
Great climb. Fun around every corner.
My second time doing this ridge, still just as fun!
Hiked with Grays
My second 14er, and my first in the quest for them all!
Maybe one or two folks back then, not crowded. A good welcome-to-Colorado hike!
8/25/04- interesting ridge. not as tough as it first appears to be. some route desicions may challenge an inexperienced mountaineer yet it is still a recommendable choice for a first venture into class 3 terrain. the knife edge was a nice rush!
9/4/16- grays and torreys with alexis. clouds moved in while we were above 13,000' and we received some snow on torreys!
The ridge is in perfect condition right now. Took me and Brandon 4 1/2 hours to do the route including running up Grays as well. Super-fun ridge run on 3rd and 4th class rock!
Took a Friday off work to hike Gray's and Torrey's Peak. The crowd was not bad at all and oh what a beautiful day.
Trip Report: Kelso Ridge
Left the campsite at 0330 hours for our traverse up to Grays and then over to Torreys. We were at the summit of Grays by 0600 and spent about 40 minutes a top. We began to make our way down the saddle between the two 14ers. The climb of Torreys is quite a bit more difficult than Grays since very few switchbacks are present. Overall, nothing more than Class 2 hiking. We were at the top of Torreys by 0745. We were the first on Grays that morning and the second group on Torreys. I couldn't believe how many people we had to pass on the way down. I would estimate it to be at least 400. The best way to climb the popular front range 14ers is early in the morning before the Denver crowds arrive.
We climbed Torreys on a beautiful summer day. Grays and Torreys are Great Colorado 14ers but in the summer they draw considerable crowds so plan accordingly.
Very exposed, but a lot of fun!
I have climbed Grays and Torreys multiple times. Nice climb and nice view.
chrissy's 1st fourteeneer--I said is was easy, she had a difference of opinion. best hike of my life--great weather, and such a beautiful mountain--but the difference, i discovered, (in spite of the masses), was sharing this special place with someone you love. on the way down, when i asked her "was it worth it?"-she said-"ask me in a couple of days"
After experiencing mountain lighting on Grays. Shane and I dashed across the traverse to quickly bagged 14er number 3 on my list. Departing the mountain we barely escaped the wrath of snow pellets.
We had the time and wanted to take a route that was less heavily traveled. The Chihuahua Gulch trail was fantastic! Didn't see another person until we reached the summit. Highly recommend this route. Great hike!
