Perfect weather, perfect partner and alot of work. I couldn't make it all the way, but what should I expect when fighting a cold, out of shape and an 8 month old that's still not sleeping through the night! I estimate we stopped at 13,500. This was a day of firsts: first time skiing a 14er, skiing in June, using crampons and climbing a couloir with skis on my pack. Had a blast despite my conditions. I will be back!
Perfect conditions! High on the fun meter. Lots of SP'ers out for a great time.
Good day, climbed with a bunch of other SPers.
Dead Dog couloir with Eric and Mike B. Lots of people on this Sat., counted 13 in the couloir at one point, 6 skiers came down. Fun climb and continued to Gray's.
scooted up this bugger after grays. didn't have any energy but knew this would be my best opportunity to summit torreys this winter. found a safe glissade path off grays during the descent to save some ware 'n tare on the ol' knees!
Hiked up Grays and Torreys on four hours' sleep after an eight-hour drive from Salt Lake. J and I met up with a couple friends and we were up and down in a hurry. Beautiful day, easy grades to the summit, great views.
Good place, i climbed it in the evening with a friend. Nice sunset and no other people.
New friend, Jeff and myself sumitted Torrey's Peak via Kelso Ridge yesterday. In the winter time, this ridge is NOT to be underestimated. The ridge itself took us almost exactly 5 hours to complete. Had some good weather and scary wind bursts but it was a very long, very satisfying day. Sunset from the summit was absolutely amazing! The 1st crux was pretty hairy as we climbed a lower 5th class chimeny on the south side. Challenging & rewarding day.
attempted Kelso Ridge, bailed down the North Ridge. TR here
Marni and I hit Torreys after Grays peak. Our 2nd 14er together.
CLIMBED VIA THE KELSO RIDGE...GREAT!!
Hiked the North Slopes to Grays and the South Slopes to Torreys from Stevens Gulch Trailhead. Clouds hovered around the summit and I considered going back to the trailhead instead of heading up to the top. Decided to go for it and the weather improved.
first of many trips up kelso ridge.
This was my 13th time climbing Torreys. We climbed Kelso Ridge from the Stevens Gulch trailhead and then over to Grays.
This was the first of many climbs of Torreys. Most climbs were from the Stevens Gulch trailhead on the normal route combined with Grays. I have done variations of Kelso Ridge 3 times. One of those times was from the Grizzly Gulch side meeting it above the Kelso saddle. I have also hiked over from Loveland Pass to Torreys and then down to Stevens Gulch trailhead.
Torreys was my first 14-er. At the time, I was such a flatlander that it really felt like a slog. It's amazing how perspective changes with experience.
2nd 14er and great ridge.
I had just moved to Colorado, and Grays and Torreys would be my first 14ers since moving here. The day started kind of gray, but didn't look threating. Easily bagged Grays and then headed over to Torreys. And while resting upon the summit it started to spit little balls of sheet. So at that point I started down, and when I got to the saddle between Grays and Torreys it was nearly whiteout conditions. Further down the snow turned to a cold rain. Fortunately I was dressed for the occasion, however many other folks were hiking in cotton sweatshirts, jeans, sneakers and no rain gear. At this point I'm thinking I am going to read about a lot of people who die due to the elements on these mountains.
Great hike with Kelly. Summited Torreys and Grays in good time. Beautiful fall colors!
Did the Grays/Torreys combination. Nice day, still snowy packed over most of the area. Lots of post-holing that day, and lots of skiers and snowboarders.
