Woooooow! That's great news, Sasa! Do make a great article for National Geographic, you're the very right person! Don't be satisfied until quality is the highest possible. Write only when you feel like writing (must be in a kind of a poetic mood). And - let me know when it's out, I'm buying that issue now.
How to do an interactive map? It's not complicated. First, how to do a map at all? I take an original map (with all details), put it in Power Point and there draw over it objects, like: ridges, summits, trails, roads, towns, all text etc. Drawing contours in Power Point is simple, the only problem I have is whether to do shading or not. Usually I draw all small details and group them, so that it's easier to layer them (back-front). To do shading is fast, but can be misleading. What does a certain gray area mean? The area on mountain with altitude higher than certain value? The area which is rocky, as opposing to grass or more flat terrain? When I have the map, I finally take the view (75%, 88%, ...) which gives me exactly 640 pixels. With the program SnagIt (shareware) I simple take that part of the screen and paste it in Photo Paint to make a .jpg file (640 pix wide and - sharp!).
How to do an interactive map? I use a software, which my son provided me (don't ask me from where, because I don't know), named Dreamweaver. It's for making internet pages. There I simply put the picture, it gives me the tool to mark areas which will be interactive, to name them (Alt=xxx) and to say to which web address the link must go. Then I simply copy-paste the code into SummitPost.
When you have time, we can together do the Velebit interactive map. Just say when you're ready! A little mailing back and forth and it's done.
Thanks Vid for the lengthy reply about the process. I have Dreamweaver but never learne how to use it and make web pages. I would love to do such maps for Velebit. Yes, when I have time you can help me to do it, thanks for the offer!
I will certainly let you know when that article comes out. In this months issue there is bonus CD 'Zvuci Velebita'. It is present for one year of CRO NG. Music is composed by some guy Matej Mestrovic (didn't know till now). They merged his music with the sounds from Velebit that Stipe Bozic recorded (birds, flies, bees, rain, storms, wind and so on). All in all sounds good. Cover of the CD is my photo of Velebit :-)
Important page for the grouping structure of the Julian Alps! I can see you decided on bold dark green captions ;-) To keep you busy: The links to weather, official sites and so on are not bold. Intentionally ?!?
Hm? Thanks! It's unproportional, because Sasa's Triglav (summit) page is so complete and actually describing also the broader area, that I didn't know what to write here. The least I would like is, that people would visit this page instead of his. But the concept of subgroups was accepted and also this one had to be done. So, let it be like it is, for some time.
I think the reason is also, that when those pages were done, the Google map was only in low resolution for Julian Alps area. I'll have a look when I have time.
