X-Country Over Waterman  Sucess!

Climbed cross country over Waterman from Cloudburst Summit, for a day with over 4000' of vertical gain. Returned down the fire road to Buckhorn and hitched a ride with passersby back to Cloudburst. Total distance around 10 miles. Incredible views, of course! Not another soul on Twin Peaks trail.

Tough but pleasant  Sucess!

Pretty tough hike but had both peaks to myself, except for the rattlesnake on the trail up there and the garbage that I found on the way down (stupid balloons).

From Buckhorn, in cold, fog, and drizzle  Sucess!

I managed to pick another poor day to go hiking. The weather didn't look too bad at the trailhead at Buckhorn, but once I was a few hundred feet up the fog arrived, with on and off drizzle, and it did not depart for the rest of the hike. So, there were none of the amazing views I'd hope to see from the summit of Twin Peaks. I was till nice to escape from the megalopolis into a beautiful pine forest, and there were a lot of flowers blooming as well. I will need to return to this one some day -- when I am in better shape, that is!

Via Waterman  Sucess!

Nice hike from Waterman Mountain. The steep use trail from Twin Peaks Saddle (TPS) is very easy to follow. A hiker who overnighted at TPS saw a black bear. Glad there are still some in the mountains!

First Time  Sucess!

A group of 5 made it to the East summit on a perfect spring day. It's a very steep trail after descending 1,200' into a very deep canyon (Devil's).

12 summits in 2 days  Sucess!

Heather and I hiked up Baden-Powell, Burnham, Throop, Hawkins, Middle Hawkins, Islip, Akawie, Winston, and Lewis the previous day and then finished our trip with Waterman and both summits of Twin Peaks.

Twin Peaks was our favorite of the trip. It had slightly more route finding to keep it interesting as well as steeper rugged terrain. The west summit involves one exposed mantle move and I found an old tin can with the original register dating back to 1967. Awesome!

From Waterman  Sucess!

Mark J and I made our own off trail route up to Waterman, then dropped down to pick up the trail merging from Buckhorn, then went to Twin Peaks. We did not use microspikes; they might have been nice for a few points going up to Twin Peaks, but we managed the whole hike with only one snow slide each. The trail from Waterman is nice and much different than hikes lower in elevation or higher in elevation near Baldy; trails were relatively rock free and covered with pine needles. The trail up to Twin Peaks summit was often not visible, so we basically went pretty much straight up off trail when the trail was lost due to snow, and this part was steep. There was a group of 15 other hikers on the summit when we were there. This is a very nice hike, although the return gain up Waterman is not as pleasant as simply reaching the summit then heading back down hill. We returned via the Buckhorn trail, which was pretty easy, but much less direct than the route we took to Waterman. So it was a nice little loop for our first time here.

From Waterman via the saddle  Sucess!

Traversed from Waterman and thought it was going to be an easy bag until we found the north slope covered in hardened snow, which made for an exhilarating ice climb to the summit (carried crampons and microspikes just in case). Views from the top are as good as advertised.

Great hike in sporadic snow   Sucess!

It was a lovely hike with Waterman from Buckhorn. Large sections of thin snow remained during the final north facing accent.

Three Points to Twin Peaks  Sucess!

Took the long way around Waterman Mountain and then down to Twin Peaks Saddle. The final 1200 feet is steep but well worth the effort. Views from East Twin are good but couldn't find a register.

Buckhorn  Sucess!

HOT day of peakbagging including Twin Peaks, Akawie, Winston Peak, Winston Ridge, Mt. Mooney, & Mt. Sally. The last 1000' feet of trail up to Twin Peaks is steep!

a rugged peak  Sucess!

I went from Buckhorn once in the late eighties on a cloudy foggy day. I first was on a false summit and then the clouds parted and I could see the real peak above me. I really enjoyed the view from the summit. The routes up from the canyon below looked like some real fine adventures.

Two Peaks  Sucess!

Grabbed Twin Peaks and Waterman today. Warm, and not much breeze, but an early start helped make it a bit better. Nice views in this part of the range.

Out of shape. Got leg cramps. Toughed out to the peak. Struggled more on the way back up from the saddle. Great views and peak.

Long Hot Dry Return  Sucess!

Nice Peak but only 3 quarts of water was not enough. At this time of year, dispite an early start 5 quarts would have make this far more enjoyable.
