Years ago while carrying a 35mm SLR camera I came across this Sierra juniper in the
Mokelumne Wilderness that I called The Twister Sierra Juniper. That old image is still marketed on my homepage at this
link, though the quality of this newer yet unprocessed image above is much better and will be available as Lightjet fine art print via
Gallery B on my below homepage.
So in 2006 I returned with my Wisner large format view camera to better capture this unusual tree. Many
Sierra junipers,
juniperus occidentalis, exhibit a twisting trunk but this specimen is the best I've seen. And I have been rambling across remote Sierra terrain many years seeking its most magnificent trees. Note the ground height lower branches on each side that also have twists. This
4x5 Provia 100F transparency was exposed through my 150mm Nikkor lens on July 25, 2006. Above the lower branches in the background are
big sagebrush,
artemisia tridentata, on these relatively young geology, Pliocene epoch slopes.
