Typical hills of the Cordillera Negra

Somewhere southwest of Recuay. There are lots of small mines in the area, some still in use, which explains the many dirt roads you'll find. If you look closely, you can see some simple stone walls in the valley ahead. I've seen similar structures elsewhere in Peru, usually with small and very simple huts, but I can only guess its purpose. Perhaps it is used to gather livestock? As you can see by the color of the grass and the rocks all over the place, this land isn't very productive in this time of year, but animals like sheep or llamas don't need much. If you know more, please let me know. 24 June 2011.
