Obstruction Peak + Columbia Point via South Colony Lakes

Straightforward way up Bear's Playground once you've crossed the ridge connecting from Humboldt's saddle. Easy hike along the ridge with not too much up and down. Beautiful views of Crestone Peak's north face from here.

nice loop from Willow Lake  Sucess!

Nice loop over 14ers: Challenger and Kit Carson, over Columbia Point to Obstruction Peak, then dropped down to upper Willow Lake. The descent into upper Willow Lake was loose.

From SCL road  Sucess!

with Darin Baker. Had to park just below the exposed drain pipe on the road due to a little bit of new snow. Still not much snow on the route, but there was plenty of ice on the road further up.

with Humboldt  Sucess!

With Rachael, southeast slopes via the saddle with Humboldt. Some fun scrambing over the ridge separating this saddle from Bears Playground. Good solid rock! The views from this summit are great as well, especially of the Crestones, very impressive from this angle. Weather was great so we climbed Humboldt on our way back to the car.

Obstruction  Sucess!

Ascended after hiking up Humboldt, then we ran out of water so stopped there instead of continuing to Colombia Point. Wasn't concerned about the wife and I, but the pup without water? NO WAY!

Repeat from Spanish Creek  Sucess!

Climbed Obstruction with Sarah, Dominic, and Dwight after a steep backpack to treeline in the Spanish Creek drainage. This is a unique way to climb this peak. I had to return the repeat favor after Sarah has done so many 13er repeats with me. The views on this late afternoon winter day were out of this world!

Unique route up Spanish Creek in winter 2x  Sucess!

1/16/09 - Backpacked to 11,800 feet in Spanish Creek which was no easy feat given the poor trail and mile of deadfall to cross. Set up camp and climbed "Obstruction Peak" at the head of the valley in the afternoon. The views were absolutely stunning and we summitted just before sunset. The main objective of the trip was a winter ascent of Kit Carson Mountain which we summitted the following day.

2/22/14 - Daytrip up Spanish Creek. Main objective was Columbia Point but we turned around at the Columbia Point - "Obstruction Peak" saddle because Columbia's east face was loaded and there was no avy safe line.

3rd Peak of the Day  Sucess!

Crossed over Obstruction on my way between Columbia Pt and Humboldt. Wasn't looking forward to going back over Pt 13290, or Humboldt for that matter, but that's the price of admission to the summit.

Kit Carson  Sucess!

This was my first climb of 13799. I didn't know it had an unofficial name at the time but I did know it was a ranked thirteener. Since I was climbing Kit Carson anyway I made it a point to summit both 13799 & Kat Carson (Columbia) on the way.

West Ridge  Sucess!

Well, it was on the way...
On the way back from Kit Carson and Challenger it would probably have been better to reclimb 13,799 than descending across and down loads of scree and talus to the South Colony Lakes!

Crazy day  Sucess!

Climbed with Ben, Tim, and Jim. Ben and I watched Tim and Jim come off of Columbia Pt and saw them traversing on the ridge above us when a huge slide ripped the E face apart. Ben and I were on our way to the face but met up with Tim and Jim instead of continuing on with our route.

Nice one.  Sucess!

Jim C., Eric Holle, Ben, and I summited this one after Jim and I came off Columbia Point. Saw a slide on Columbia's E face 45 min. after our descent. Thunder from the south drove us all back to S Colony Lakes.
