Almost had a heart attack on the way down when a hawk waited till I was about two feet away to fly off. I had not seen it and it really startled me!
Absolutely beautiful hike from Matterhorn Creek (15-16 miles RT). Views were amazing and I'm definitely going back to do this one again.
Climbed it the day after a snow storm rolled through, some deep snow in places but the snow made the views even better.
Two-day overnighter starting at the beginning of the 4WD road. Camped just below treeline and was on the summit by 7:45a the following morning. Well worth the effort, despite limited views on the summit. My first true 14er!!
My last 14er AND centennial, friends totally caught me off guard when they started pulling out gifts and libations on summit, perfect ending to my centennial quest!
Awesome mountain with great views all around.
very pretty area. flowers were amazing!
First time this high up.
One of the prettiest mountain area ever. So many colors!
My husband's first 14K+ peak. Our first peak together married. Great weather and wonderful views...nice first day of our honeymoon!
The views are really some of the best...
Climbed standard route on Uncompahgre Peak from the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead. I bagged Matterhorn on the way back, and Dustin Kelley bagged Wetterhorn which I had already climbed. Uncompahgre was #47 Colorado 14er with 11 remaining. Long Day after hitting San Luis the day before.
Beautiful day, great trail.
Thunderstorms were there but not for long. Ended up getting to the summit around 5pm and it was an amazing view from up there. Hinsdale County is surely one of my favorites!
Second time, this time with Ben and Whitney. Went up the standard route, not too much snow but still holding some large patches as you gain the ridge. We didn't use snowshoes or ice axes. The summit gully is dry. Access road blocked by downed trees about a mile below the 4WD trailhead, about 4 trees all of which are large enough caliper to require a chainsaw.
Great day in the San Juans
Camped the night before along Nellie Creek road as far up as my car could get (1st creek crossing). Hitchhiked up the rest in the morning. A few inches of snow fell 2 days before, which made the not challenging trail more fun. After tea at the summit, I headed back down, returning via the basin south of the peak via a trail the reconnects with Nellie Cr. Rd. south of the TH. The trail was muddy from the rapidly melting snow but I made it back in good time to have a dinner of pizza with lima beans and carrots on it in Lake City.
Started from the TH at 3:30 pm, back to the car around 6:15 p.m. Had the summit to myself, awesome views.
Amazing HUGE peak. On to Wetterhorn and Matterhorn. 6 and 7th 14ers in 4 days so far.
