My last 14er AND centennial, friends totally caught me off guard when they started pulling out gifts and libations on summit, perfect ending to my centennial quest!

Matterhorn Creek Trail
Climbed standard route on Uncompahgre Peak from the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead. I bagged Matterhorn on the way back, and Dustin Kelley bagged Wetterhorn which I had already climbed. Uncompahgre was #47 Colorado 14er with 11 remaining. Long Day after hitting San Luis the day before.

Thunderstorms were there but not for long. Ended up getting to the summit around 5pm and it was an amazing view from up there. Hinsdale County is surely one of my favorites!
Second time, this time with Ben and Whitney. Went up the standard route, not too much snow but still holding some large patches as you gain the ridge. We didn't use snowshoes or ice axes. The summit gully is dry. Access road blocked by downed trees about a mile below the 4WD trailhead, about 4 trees all of which are large enough caliper to require a chainsaw.

fun in the snow
Camped the night before along Nellie Creek road as far up as my car could get (1st creek crossing). Hitchhiked up the rest in the morning. A few inches of snow fell 2 days before, which made the not challenging trail more fun. After tea at the summit, I headed back down, returning via the basin south of the peak via a trail the reconnects with Nellie Cr. Rd. south of the TH. The trail was muddy from the rapidly melting snow but I made it back in good time to have a dinner of pizza with lima beans and carrots on it in Lake City.

Linked with Wetterhorn
A long round trip across a lot of dull tundra. Some interesting technical walls. Great windbreaks for tents on the summit.

Uncompaghre from Matterhorn Creek TH
A couple of the folks hiking with us didnt have 4wd so we did this route from the Matterhorn creek TH. It was a bit longer and more elevation than doing it from the 4wd spot on Nellie, but I think it offers a more pleasant and scenic approach? Very cool peak, with views to kill for. The San Juans are pretty amazing.
