With Michelle on an amazing clear, cool, and dry fall day…  Sucess!

Excellent outing from formal 4wd trailhead. 22 degrees at the start. Warmed up quick. Terrific fall colors in full fury. Our favorite 14er so far. 4wd road is probably accessible to most legit stock 4x4 vehicles but not lower clearance crossovers or light duty SUVs. There are just two short sections that would be showstoppers for the wrong vehicle. One section is after first significant river crossing about halfway up, the second is at 3/4 mark on sharp steep blocky switchback. Good luck!

Long Road / But Beautiful  Sucess!

We started from the bottom of Nellie Creek TH which was a big mistake. Any vehicle can make it up a couple of miles before the first creek crossing, but we hoofed it. Got our feet a bit wet, but we were happy to get to the single track and cruise up. We started at 2:30am and we’re surprised to see absolutely no one until later in the descent. The class 2 scrambling was fun, and the descent was leisurely. Easiest 16 miles ever. Beautiful peak and amazing surrounding area.

From Henson Creek Road  Sucess!

Beautiful hike up Uncompahgre. Started up Nellie Creek Road from Henson Creek Rd. at 2:40 am. Summited just after 7 am. Finished around 10:50. The sky was clear and sunny which was a nice reprieve from the storm weather of the weekend. There is a fallen tree blocking the road just before the 2nd creek crossing. If wanting to drive to the top, that will need to be cleared first.

Uncompahgre  Sucess!

Easy but scenic hike up Uncompahgre. Not very busy for a weekend, I only counted 13 people on the trail including myself. Too bad the area was smoky which obscured the views.

From Nellie Creek TH  Sucess!

Fun drive up to the TH! There was still a bit of snow high on the mountain, so I picked a more direct line that avoided it. Bummer, no summit register on the top.

Cool HIke  Sucess!

Paul and I had a great day. Watched an ermine, in it's white, winter coat chasing a pika right near the summit. I think the pika got away, but not sure.

Matterhorn Approach  Sucess!

Third time, but this time from Matterhorn Creek. Trail between the two peaks pretty snowy in the AM, then muddy and slushy in the afternoon. Upper mountain some packed out snow until below the crux gully, then dry the rest of the way. With Katie, Kyle and Andrew.

F-16s  Sucess!

Got an early start based on the forecast. Nice easy hike for this flatlander, which put me on the summit in 2 hours and 50 minutes from below the 4x4 TH to get that 3,000' gain. After waiting on the summit for about 10 minutes for my climbing partner, we took a 20 minute break and headed down. Off the ridge and probably 1,000' below it, I heard a fighter jet. I looked back towards the ridge and saw an F-16 flying by just barely visible. Then there was the sound of another one that was not visible (blocked by the ridge) and repeat. In total four F-16s did a low level flyby on the west side of the ridge. I was kicking myself for the early start until it began to rain just as I got back into the trees. All in all a great hike and I missed the hoards headed up in sketchy weather. Great 4th of July hike.

San Juans  Sucess!

Loved the 4*4 road up, but the 4 miles takes about 45 mins. Great, gentle trail up to saddle. A section (crux) of about 100ft after reaching ridge crest is enough to warrant a helmet, IMO. Just be safe. Wind was horrific, but a wonderful day other than that. Love the San Juans! 14er #11

Ember’s first 14’er  Sucess!

Started just below the Nellie Creek Trailhead by .88 miles. This was Ember’s first 14’er and we practiced some breathing methods to get her acclimatized before hypoxia could set in. She made it all the way to the top and we had a great day. We descended the Matterhorn creek trail and back to the car/campsite.

2nd San Juan 14er for me  Sucess!

I've wanted this one for some time ... a superlative experience. With Akiko, Beth and James. Via Nellie Creek trail - we parked our vehicle near first stream crossing to start our hike to the trailhead.

Uncompahgre   Sucess!

Kimberly and I climbed Uncompahgre Peak. It was cold, windy, and a little snow fell, but it wasn't bad for October. After enjoying the views from the summit, we headed down. We drove over to Mill Creek to meet others at the 14ers gathering.

Standard Trail  Sucess!

Pretty mellow trail up to a large flat summit. Good views of Wetterhorn and surrounding peaks. Very windy on the ridge.

Uncompahgre, my third 14er  Sucess!

I hiked the peak on the first of a three-day road trip in Colorado. It was my third 14er, but my first experience with altitude sickness.

A friend and I arrived late on Friday night and found a decent spot to camp on a short side road away from the main road along Nellie Creek. Up early the next morning, we drove the rest of the way to the trailhead and started hiking by 6:30AM. It took five hours to get to the summit, and most of the way I was feeling fatigued, with a mild headache and a little nausea. Getting back down took 2.5 hours.

The rest of our weekend was spent driving and doing short hikes. We hit Engineer Pass on Sunday and Black Bear Pass on Monday, but unfortunately no more 14ers for me on this trip.

Ran this in a day   Sucess!

This is an easy one, so i made it a little more difficult. Ran the route from the start to Wetterhorn, back to back with Wet for day 2. Since there was no snow or need for crampons/ice ax, just went up light and came back fast. Up in 3.5 hours, ascending West Face via my own route, to connect with Uncompaghre Standard Route right before summit. Gorgeous crossing the Matterhorn basin, and saw barely no one. The San Juans have great climbing.

Great verticality & panorama  Sucess!

Easy really to be a 14er but then that's Colorado. I love the Ouray area, really nice. Wouldn't mind owning a get-away there.
The mountain features a relatively flat top with lots of room to take in an incredible view; on and I truly love the sheer walls.
