Upper Drop

Upper Drop

In my opinion, this is the prettiest of the cascades at Dark Hollow Falls. A little easy (and sometimes slippery) scrambling is required to get from the trail at the base to this point. Slightly harder scrambling up the right side here gets you back up to the upper viewpoint (and the sign warning you not to approach waterfalls closely). Of all the waterfalls in the park, Dark Hollow Falls is the closest to the road. That, plus the fact that the trailhead is across the road from the park's largest campground and one of its busiest lodges and visitor centers, means it can be anything but peaceful. But if one goes early in the morning, especially in the winter, it can be as delightful as any other waterfall in the park. Shenandoah National Park, VA; November 2009
