Re: Amazing

Thanks Ej!
It is nicknamed the 'firefall' as an homage to the real fires they used to push off Glacier Point.
The sun only shines up the canyon this way twice a year, in October and February. The conditions have to be just right.
There has to be snow on El Capitan, the daytime temps have to be warm enough to melt the snow enough to supply the falls, and the sky has to be clear from the park, basically all the way west to the coast in order to allow the light through.
One photog in front of me stated she had been trying for 6 years to capture this. The last couple years had nowhere near enough snow and before that there was often cloud cover when she was there.

Is this...

Horsetail falls on El Cap? If so, it must have been on a very short window of time just before sunset. And the photo was taken from the parking lot for Ranger Rock, AKA "Manure Pile Buttress."
An incredible photo!

Re: Is this...

Along the river just east of cathedral picnic area, just west of the restrooms and the meadow. If you go when it's running, you can't miss all the tripods!

Thanks in advance.

Re: No doubt,...

February 13, 2016. It should actually be peaking this weekend, Feb 21 and 22. This lasted about 20-30 minutes, starting around 5:30.
Taken from approx .9 miles east of cathedral picnic area. The park closes off the left lane for parking, as there are about 100 photogs shooting.

Thanks !

They just had

an article with photos of this scene in Yahoo today. I thought it was your photo!

Re: They just had

Probably one much better. My ISO was inadvertently on auto and I was in a hurry. It'll work in a pinch though, and I may go back for one more try

Not that you or I really care about POTD, but how this did not get it when something with a lower score did, I do not know. I am guessing that a lot of votes came in after the automated selection was made. Sounds like voter fraud to me. ;-)

Anyway, I made this a Featured Photo to give it more of the attention it deserves.

Re: How...

If BIADH would have named this picture
"Feel the Burn" he would have captured the
Millennial Vote.

Good grief...

that is an amazing photograph. Pure magic.

Politically speaking ...

Don't matter if you're Re-pub or Demo God,
ALL can enjoy the view and one party cannot
move forward without the other one anyway.

An eye-catcher in a truly messed-up World.

Is there any way to override the automated POTW for next week and get this on the front page for a week??

Re: Bob,

I can't override the system. It's a shame this didn't get POTW, as it is a great shot of a rare occurrence and thus quite exceptional. Normally, I don't pay much notice to POTW and actually tire of seeing the same picture day after day, but it would have been nice this time to see this one get a more prominent position.

Re: Bob,

I understand. Like you said, this is an exceptional photo and takes a certain amount effort to capture it.
Thanks for placing it in the featured section.
