Velebitska Degenija

Velebitska Degenija

Velebitska Degenija (Degenia Velebitica) is trademark of Velebit flora. It might not be the most beautiful flower but this Velebit endemic is best known, a jewel among 2250 plant species that grow on Velebit. Velebitska Degenija is also rarest species of Croatian flora and is, of course, strictly protected. Hungarian botanist Arpad Degen found it in 1907. For protection reasons I thought for a long time should it be on the site but rich flora of Velebit isn't well presented without it. If you stumble upon Velebitska Degenija please don't pick, as any flowers! Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: What a lovely flower!

Velebitska Degenija is one of the kind Kenzo, not related to other sorts of plants. It only grows on Velebit and it has been found on few places. So, it isn't widely spread even on Velebit. It is endangered and in the coming future it might disappear completely which would be just one more species lost in the long streak of those gone forever from our planet. First of all some idiot hikers and rare species hunters, that doesn't have any sense for nature protection, pick it. Also some of its habitats have been taken over by grass lately.

Re: What a lovely flower!

The situation in Four Girls Mountains is same as Velebit. Especialy, the Notbolirion bulbuliferum (a kind of large-sized lily ) is on the verge of extinction in the whole Four Girls Mountains area.
