The ridge to Ventana Cone was a bushwhack but not nearly as heinous as I expected. Only the thirteenth visitor since the register was placed in 2003 by Bob Burd. In fact Bob's crew accounts for 3 of the entries. The fact that he went on to tag Ventana Double Cone is remarkable. It looked like nasty going.
Dropped my camping gear at Pine Ridge Camp and then hiked / bushwhacked along ridge to Ventana Cone. A lot of the brush in places has burned in the fires of 2008, but enough remains to make this "interesting" - heh heh heh ..
Cool and windy day, beautiful views of the sea. Got back to camp just as light faded from the sky and the moon rose over the ridge.
Only one entry from 2008 in the register before mine, probably before the fires started.
Nice job Rob! Hope you had fun. Did the route from VC to VDC get burned as well?
Thanks Bob ! I don't think it did .. will post some pics to the page soon ..
Hoo - boy. Finally successful at tagging all three of the peaks along Pine Ridge in one long, 20hr dayhike with Michael Graupe. Trip Report
Along with SVC on a crisp clear winter day. The Pine Ridge trail itself has been greatly cleaned up over the past year and is now almost completely free of overgrowth and deadfalls. The bushwack along the firebreak was overgrown as expected.
Pics and trip report are here
I lucked out and made the traverse to Ventana Cone from Pine Ridge just a few months after a fire crew had cleared a hand line all the way there while battling the 1993 Cienega Fire. Sure sounds like the brush is coming back with a vengeance! But what a neat and remote peak, and I look forward to returning sometime soon.
Enjoyable hike--well worth the effort for the spectacular summit view towards Ventana Double Cone alone.
It wasn't so enjoyable in 2004, with the brush feeling a good deal thicker than it had been a year ago. I think my route-finding skills suck.
It was a fine hike as mentioned below. But I think the bushwhacking was great fun. And such fine weather in the middle of January! Trip Report
It was so much fun we went back again the following year. Tried to make it to VDC again, but failed (again). Trip Report
A fine hike with Bob. The bushwhacking isn't bad. (But it's not good, either.)
Fine weather, fine hiking, and some of the most spectacular views in the Ventana region. Trip Report.
