So are there any desert peaks you haven't been on? Great way to keep busy!

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...Thanks. I really enjoy the desert...as well as the alpine. With the winters rather pleasant around here, it gives me a chance to visit my local peaks quite regularly from November to March.
Bo was telling me that you were thinking of doing Aires Butte with he and Tanya while you were in town. You really should have. Aires is a rather fun climb with extremely rewarding views.
Oh, and next time you're around, I'll be happy to take you through one of Death Valley's classic technical canyons.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...I hope I get the chance to take you up on that offer. During my trip to DV, I saw numerous canyons from ridges and summits that looked very interesting.
Bo and Tanya both ended up with conflicts of their own on the Aires day. I climbed Checkerboard at dawn and then headed over to where they'd be in hopes of catching them before they got started, but I didn't see Tanya's car. Bo had to do a SAR, and Tanya wasn't feeling too hot.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...Bummer. If only you'd driven 3 miles back toward Zion Canyon. When Tanya canceled (cuz of illness), Bo raced to where I'd told him I was climbing something with a buddy. He made it just in time to join us for our objective. His SAR wasn't until later that afternoon.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...That explains something I've been wondering about. My wife and I did Angels Landing that afternoon and saw some SAR work going on below. I've been wondering if that was the SAR Bo helped with, but it didn't fit with his not being out in the morning.
I knew what Tanya's car was, but I never asked Bo about his. If I had, I certainly would have spotted you guys, as my wife and I ended up doing the Tunnel Overlook trail, so we passed you at some point. From the overlook, I fled the crowds and went up to the base of the East Temple, a little route I'm starting to work on now. Great little trip up there, with great views. The East Temple looks great, but there was no way I was even thinking of trying it in just hiking boots.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...Yep. We were parked at the Canyon Overlook Trail parking area. As a matter of fact, when we were sorting gear, Bo asked a guy who'd pulled up if his name was Bob. It wasn't.
I've done the hike up from the Overlook to the SE corner of East Temple. There's a route that drops from there into Shelf Canyon and then on down into Upper Pine Creek. A nice area. Had you looked close enough, you might have spotted us climbing the south buttress of Deertrap Mountain, a mere 1/2 mile from you.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...Funny-- on our way to Checkerboard, my wife remembers seeing some guys parked at the Overlook TH. She says they didn't look like the windshield tourist types. That was around 8. I wonder if that was you and your friend. We were in a red Mustang-- Hertz's idea of a midsize car.
Well, there should be other times. Death Valley and southern Utah are my favorite desert areas in the country, for starters. My brother is moving back to your town at the end of the month, taking another of my brothers with him, and I'm sure I'll visit them. And my wife and I are making serious plans to move to the SW in two years, with St. George currently being the area we're most interested in. We want a large enough city so that we don't leave the conveniences we're now used to, but at the same time we don't want our kids growing up with the materialism and cultural decay going on in our area and other big urban areas. St. George seems like a nice compromise, and it's in striking distance of so many great places. The big question is what the job market there is like, so that's what we have to study next.

Re: On down into Coffin Canyon...While I don't remember a red Mustang, that was indeed my buddy and I in the parking lot at 8. Bo showed up about 8:15.
St. George is a fine town. Not a lot of great restaurants, but a real mellow vibe, some culture (there, and in nearby Cedar City) and tons and tons of hiking, canyoneering, sport, trad and adventure climbing. You can't go wrong.
