Alpine paintbrush?This may be alpine paintbrush (Castilleja rhexifolia), although it is difficult to say for certain since there are over 100 species of paintbrush and they hybrdize. I enjoy the section and pictures of the wildflowers, I think it adds to the overall perspective of what it is like to be on the mountain by contributing biological information (and I'm just interested in wildflowers).

Re: Alpine paintbrush?Have you been on this trail? When I was on it this summer, I was overwhelmed by the variety of flowers. It took us much longer to reach Angel Wing because I wanted to stop every few feet for flower pictures. Late July is probably the best time.

Re: Alpine paintbrush?I have not been on this trail, nor unfortunately even to the Many Glacier Area in the summer, but it seems Glacier is full of wildflowers. On July 21 of this year we did Going-to-the-Sun Mountain (GTTS), and the avalance chutes below the Mahtapi -GTTS saddle were filled with an incredible variety of wildflowers like lupines, valarians, multiple types of paintbrush, arnica, beargrass, elephants head, columbines, and asters to name a few. Also, in May in the North Fork area, there were lots of Calypso bulbosa (fairyslipper) and glacier lilies (really doing well after the fires of 2003 around Kintla Lake).

Re: Alpine paintbrush?Wow, I climbed matahpi only 6 days later, on July 27th. We went up under the saddle between Matahpi and GTTS. I was surprised by how much beargrass there was this year
