Middle Pyramid

Overview

Rising up out of the Old Cascades about 30 miles northwest of the Three Sisters are the Three Pyramids, an almost one-half scale version of their better known High Cascade neighbors. The Three Pyramids come in at just under 6000 feet and have rocky pinnacled summits. Middle Pyramid has two trails up to the summit although, when I climbed it, the main Middle Pyramid trail was overgrown, littered with trees and weeds and looked like it had not been maintained in quite a while.

Snow stays into July here so be prepared for some fields of it near the summit until then. Views from the summit extend from the Three Sisters to Jefferson. There are also tons of views of the Old Cascades and a host of other rocky topped peaks in the area.

The summit used to have a lookout as well.

Getting There

From Portland (the north and west), take I-5 south to Highway 22 east (Santiam Highway exit 253 in Salem, OR). Take Highway 22 east about 77 miles to a point between mileposts 76 and 77 where you see a small sign for Lava Lake Meadow Road 2067. About 2 miles down the road you'll take a right at the sign for Pyramids Trail. Follow the signs to road's end and a small parking lot (more like an area of gravel).

From the east (Bend, OR) take Santiam Highway about 48 miles to the same spot between mileposts 76 and 77.

Red Tape

Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead and there are 3 signs there to remind you. Considering the condition of the trail, it's ridiculous to think you have to pay to hike here.

Camping

Camping is allowed in the area and is free although there are not too many spots on the trail where you could.
