Overview

Orjen is a highest elevation point of the subadriatic Dinarides,
a steep mountain group that spans accross Bosnia- Herzegovina/Montenegro border.

Less known and less frequently visited in comparison
to some other Dinaric alps mountains,
it does offer an interesting experience to anyone interested in scrambling
up and down the completely karstified limestone evironment.

By plane:
Nearest intl airports are Tivat (Montenegro)
and Dubrovnik (Croatia)
By bus: There is a direct bus connection between
abovementioned Dubrovnik and town Kotor (Montenegro)
operating via Herceg Novi. Herceg Novi is most convinient place
to start digging deep into Orjen. Please refer to the Camping & Huts
section for further info.

Glimpse into history

Orjen`s first "hiking" route,
the path from Orjen saddle to Zubacki kabao (1894m, highest peak)
was built up in 1895. for military purposes,
more precisely in order to provide more pleasant way of trekking it up
for the Habsburg heir to the throne Erzherzog Rudolf.
If name rings the bell,
indeed, same cheerful character was already mentioned on this server on the Osorscica page
Man in charge for building it up was
Austro-Hungarian Army Generalmajor Marijan Freiherr Varešanin,
a Croat, born at eastcroatian town of Gunja in 1847.
(Back in 1883. Varešanin was already attached
to his royal household to continue the
heir to the throne's instruction in military history and military geography.)
So, Rudy and Marijan, despite slightly odd circumstances,
are considered as mountain pioneers for this area.

Real boom, however, started in late 1920s/early 1930s.
(At a time, Orjen was, together with Kotor Bay, part of
Croatia)
Giving credit where the credit is due,
one should mention ship captain Djuro Pany, author of numerous articles
about Orjen, published in "Hrvatski planinar" (magazine of Croatian alpine club) during the 1930s. His articles and fine photos
shed the initial light on this fairly unknown mountain area.

Unshielded, may serve as bivouac.

to the Zubacki kabao peak (around 2 hours from the hut).

Hi, appreciate you noticed the variety of endemic plants. Of course other mountains have their endemics but for the Dinaric alps Orjen is the hotspot. Pinus heldreichii is a hard pine and a rare tree. It's distribution is localised to some mountains of Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Italy. Serbian spruce is missing and couldn't probably dwell because of summer draught. You find serbian spruce only in the interior mountains were summer rain is constant.
Greetings

All mediterranean mountains are hotspots of biodiversity. Those particularly interested in flora and fauna can enjoy in the exploration and discovery ot the rich flora of mountains like Velebit, Biokovo and Orjen; the three main mountain nodes at the adriatic coast. Every of the three groups has its own unique features Some rare endemic species and a lot valuable plants, that offer digestive, aromatic and/or drug uses are commonlyf ound. Moreover many have a special aesthetic value and can be found exclusively on one of the mentioned mountains. You seem to dwell on quite a bit of botany here. For example you have shown some endemic plants, trout lillies, Acer heldreichii , Pinus heldreichii (is this a hard pine or a white pine?) . I was surprised that there are no Serbian Spruce.

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
