North Twilight Peak

Overview

North Twilight Peak is located in Colorado’s West Needle Mountains. This small cluster of peaks is separated from the higher Needle and Grenadier Mountains by the plunging 5,000’ deep Animas River Gorge. The West Needle Mountains are located in the San Juan National Forest, and the Weminuche Wilderness Area. The West Needle Mountains contain no 14ers or Centennial Peaks. As a result, they don’t receive much attention. But the huge bulk of North Twilight as it rises above Crater Lake is truly an impressive sight.

Getting There

From Molas Pass on US 550 south of Silverton, drive about two miles south to the signed Andrews Lake turnoff. Turn left onto the paved access road, and drive about a half mile or so to Andrews Lake. There are two parking lots here – an upper one and a lower one. If you are going to park your car here overnight, you should use the upper parking lot. You’ll have a good view of Snowdon Peak from here, but the Twilights are out of sight.

Camping

Camping is allowed at Crater Lake. There are no developed campgrounds in the vicinity of Andrews Lake. However, there are many campgrounds in the San Juan National Forest.
