Fiacaill ridge

Approach

Drive to the Cairngorm ski car park -signposted from Aviemore.

Route Description

From the ski car park take the obvious path heading south-west. After about a mile head uphill to the south up the obvious bouldery ridge (the bottom of the Fiacaill ridge). At approx 1100m the ridge levels out, and the fun begins. The rest of the route is obvious -it involves a scramble up the steep ridge to the Cairn Lochan plateau. Keeping to the crest (left) is relatively exposed and a bit trickier, but easier ground can be found the the right. The ridge is quite short-lived. Once on the plateau, turn left and follow the rim of the great Northern Corries to the summit of Cairn Gorm. Alternatively, it is possible to head south and take in Ben MacDui, the highest peak in the range and the second highest in the UK.

Essential Gear

Crampons and ice-axe in winter. Warm clothing at all times.
