Approach

Take the Stowe gondola to top. Walk down the gravel service road about 200 yds and the trailhead is on the right.

Route Description

The summit can be reached from the top of the Stowe gondola via the Cliff Trail, then hiking north on the Long Trail to the summit. This may look like the "easy way" (and it certainly is easier than hiking up the whole mountain), but the Cliff trail is no easy hike. It is about 0.4 mi of large, jumbled boulders, with a few sections of steep, flat rock near the top. Nothing here is technically very hard, but it is slow going and you need to be careful as you pick your way over the boulders.

Once you gain the ridgeline, turn right (north) on the Long Trail and follow the white blazes and cairns about 0.3 mi to the summit. The exposed ridgeline is an easy, spectacular walk with terrific views in all directions. Return to the gondola hut by the same route.

Essential Gear

good hiking boots really help on the boulders

Route Comment

I might be skiing Stowe this winter, most likely in Feb., how much harder is this trail in winter, with skis and boots?

Route Comment

A side trail as you start up the Cliff Trail, bear to your left at the first fork after you enter the Clff Trail from the service road below the Gondola House. Follow up to a large flake on the cliff wall. Scramble through the narrow slot. Snow is often in the bottom of the slot through July. Scramble out where it rejoins the Cliff Trail. A fun side bar.
