Overview

The Stellihorn is a not very prominent mountain in the Weissmiesgroep, but its a mountain with a great view around from the summit. The route to this mountain is not the easyest to find but your view upthere is worth it. You can find Stellihorn East of the Stausee Mattmark on the end of the Saas valley, Wallis/Vallais, Switserland. There are two known routes on the Stellihorn, the NW ridge over Stelli, and a Glacierroute over the Nollenglacier wich you also use to go down if you have climbed over point stelli(3358m). The most of the ridge over Stelli is just rockscrambling, on the ridge between Stelli and Stellihorn its Rock II UIAA. Its an alpineclimb with no normal path to the summit so you need climbing experiënce to reach the summit! Its not a very often climbed mountain so the chance is great that you are alone on this mountain. From the summit you can see Monte Rosa, Mischabelgroup and Weissmiesgroup. Getting There

You go to the Saas valley, Wallis and go all to the end passing Saasgrund and Saas Almagell to Stausee Mattmark. This is a lake that works as waterreservoir. You can park near the restaurant at the lake. There is also a bus going there from Saas Almagell.

From here you go at the eastside of the lake, on the hikingpath and follow this till the path splits to the left. You go up this path. At +/- 2500 m you go N, there is a sort of trail you can follow, to Wysstal. Here you can choose for the Glacierroute over the Nollenglacier or the ridge over Stelli. For the Glacier you go up in E direction to the stellipas. From here you go up the Nollenglacier, SE to the rocks under the summit wich can easy scramble up. You also use this route down if you come over Stelli. For the ridge at Wysstal you go to 2800m and then SE to the ridge wich is going up to Stelli. This is easy walking and scramble in rock terrain. Following the N-ridge of Stelli you will reach this "presummit" at 3358m.

From here you go up the ridge to the Stellihorn, you cant mis it from here ;) This ridge is also scramble and rock II uiaa.

Use the Glacierroute to go down.

From the parking at the Mattmark restaurant its 7 hours for ascent.

Camping

The nearest campingsites are in Saas Grund. If you like a hotel you can find it in Saas Almagell.

Stuff u needed

The Stellihorn is not very hard but its stil a alpine climb. If u are ok in rock you can climb free, else you use a (short)rope and some stuff for belay( i prefer in that terrain fastropping)on the part between Stelli and Stellihorn. The part to Stelli is just scramble. For the glacier you need standard stuff, be aware! There are crevasses! Take anought food and drink, its a longrip!

Coordinates Glitch

I just stumbled onto a strange glitch which corrupted the location of numerous pages and listed them all at the same point in southern AZ, USA. Please fix the coordinates of this page to the following (46.036257, 8.001038) and I'll be happy to remove my "needs updates" vote. Thanks!
