Last 600 feet of Southwest Ridge

Last 600 feet of Southwest Ridge

Note: This route annotation is likely wrong. Read Diggler's improved description below Last 600 feet or so to Black Kaweah's summit on the Southwest Face route. The summit block looks harder than it is. A straightforward (but steep) ramp leads diagonally to the final short chimney. The chimney contains some intimidating 4th class...uh, I mean, "3rd class" moves for your downclimbing pleasure. Note: the red line is only a guide, not an absolute. Choose your own route, at your own risk. In particular, you will probably avoid the steep section in the middle of the photo by climbing a spur on climber's left.

you sure?

Hi Morgan,

I think that the last 'backwards S' line that leads to what you show as the top is incorrect.

I believe that the true summit is the bump to the L of what you show as the summit. Also, I think that the correct way goes to the L (on the upper portion of what's shown) to the diagonal ramp on said bump (not R).

I say this because I took this overlay on the route with me while going up & tried following the approximate line shown here, & found myself in a sea of steep, 4th-class rotten rock- I worked my way to the L (of what is suggested here), where the rock was much better as well as far easier, & continued to the top.

Re: you sure?

Uh-oh, I feel bad that this actually mislead you on the route. I'm sure you are right. If you post an update to this route, I will delete this photo. If not, hopefully people will read your correction.

Thanks,
Morgan
