Fording South Fork of the Flathead River

Fording South Fork of the Flathead River

Extended trips into the Bob Marshall are often done on horseback supported by pack string. Here a pack string fords the South Fork of the Flathead River at Black Bear Creek. Photo July 1971 by Fred Spicker

Great shot

My Grandfather crossed this same area with his packstring for over 25 years as he guided in the Black Bear Creek area.

He was known as thw "short-string packer" as his pack string was rarely over 8 horses long.

I really wonder if this is isn't him?

Thanks for the memory!

Was this photo taken in July or sumbitted then?
