Airy rappel

Airy rappel

Catho rappeling down on the south face of the Dent du Géant. Much better, and faster, than rappeling down the normal route. You can seen the start of the Rochefort-ridge just beneath us. Mont Blanc Group - July 2009

That thing...

above you looks like an ascender. I'm sure it's for safety, but I wonder if it's attached to both ropes. Is it possible to post a close-up photo of the device here on SP? I also see a carabiner above it.
Could you please enlighten me?

Re: That thing...

That thing is a ATC Guide (Black Diamond), wich she uses to rappel. It is indeed attached to both ropes (it must be). It is that high because of the needed distance between the ascender and the safety prusik. The carabiner above it is for "securing at the belay" (don't know the english word). And when you clip it between the ropes above the ascender while rappeling, it makes sure that the ropes won't intertwine.

I hope this has enlighten you. Do not hesitate to ask if you've more questions.

Re: That thing...

Thank you Jurgen, as it turns out I have been using ATCs (Air Traffic Controller) for the past 15 years. When I enlarged the photo it became more clear. I really like your method of puting a carbiner between the two ropes. It's much better than a finger of your break hand.
Another thing I noticed was that the ATC is attached to the harness with a short sling. I have never seen that before, and I like it. It keeps the equipment and loose clothing from getting caught in the rappel/belay device.

BTW, A Great photo.
Happy climbing,
Marc

Re: That thing...

Thanks Marc. You should try it once, it works for me. I learned it a few years ago from a Mountain guide.

Happy climbing to you too!

Cool Rig

I studied it because of Marc's comment. I may give it a whirl.
