Excellent ShotMakes Huron look like a challenging peak. Not really from the standard route, but I would like to see somebody do it from this side (SW).

Re: Excellent ShotThanks Bryan. In this condition the SW looks like 2000 feet of scree and talus. A challenge indeed. After a heavy snow year this might be a good way up in May. I think I'll keep my distance until you do it first. :) Jim

Re: Excellent ShotYou guys aren't going to believe this, but back in the late 80s, MA, RA and I climbed up the west face of Huron Peak. This is before a well established trail was built on the mountain. This was also my first climb of the mountain. We did not have a route description with us. We hiked south toward the Three Apostles, then hung a left!
We climbed the west face of the mountain, up obviously steep Sawatch terrain, first through forest and then up a great and seemingly endless steep slope of car sized boulders. For better than three hours, it was solid Class 3 scrambling that truly became a challenge in terms of endurance. I do not remember much more of the climb to the summit, as the endless boulder slope memory has imprinted itself on my mind. We descended what was then the out-of-control standard route (ruts down the north face tundra) before the CFI transformed the mountain to its current status.
I have not submitted the route to SP because I remember few specifics about it, and because of the nature of the terrain (and the fact I can't remember its character further up the mountain), I feel I cannot recommend it to SP folks. But it certainly was an adventure!
