Monte Magnodeno

Overview

From the main summit of Resegone, toward West, starts a ridge, dividing two basins, the Bione (stream) one, to the W, ending at Germanedo, Belledo and Lecco and the Galavesa (stream) valley, to the S, ending at Erve and descending, with a deep wild canyon, to the lake of Garlate in Calolziocorte.
This ridge, after a notch (Passo del Foo) grows to the Cima del Foo and, after a short rocky part, ends with the grassy spurs of Monte Magnodeno.

This description could make one think about a sweet mountain ... as all the summits of Prealpi even this small mountain has some features that make it worth to be visited/climbed, better in a late autumn or winter windy day.

Many hiking paths and, most of all, many hunters tracks lead to the ridge and cross the sides of this long ridge.

Of course, due to the not big difference in elevation, the hike doesn't require an accomodation; in any case, if you feel tired once at the summit, you can use, without problems, a very fine, big, comfortable and clean "bivouac".

Getting There

All accesses to this summit start from Lecco and surroundings so, first of all you have to get the Eastern side of Lecco lake branch along

the SS36 (Spluga) if coming from Milano or Sondrio.

the SS639 if coming from Bergamo or Eastern Lombardia.

Lecco for the paths starting from Germanedo, Belledo or Versasio

Calolziocorte for the paths starting from ERVE

From Calolziocorte follow the road to Rossino and ERVE. This road runs high and spectacular on the left side (right ascending) of the canyon of Galavesa stream and arrives in ERVE, a small but very fine hamlet at about 600m. At the first bridge turn to the left, cross the stream and follow the road toward SAINA, at a fork at the end of a small recent built up area, when the road start descending toward a small bridge, you have to stop and park the car (good free parking on the right side some 100m before the fork) Herefrom 3 possibilities : 1 yellow on the map - down to the small bridge to get a path (Sentiero della valle) that, not easy to be found in autumn due to the leaves that cover it, crossing a fine and wild wood leads you with a long round, to the notch S of the summit ... (long and good for coming down) 2 - at the fork turn to the right and, few meters after the beginning of a steep paved road, you find a small sign "Magnodeno" indicating, on the left, the normally used path from this side of the mountain that across the wood on the E side of the "valle" joins the previuos one at the notch 3 red on the map - ignore the sign and go on straight, pass across the small passages between the houses and, ascending at best (some hunter tracks) the very steep woods and glades (a little tiring), get the S ridge and follow it (some shooting boxes) till the notch. The strange shooting box built just at the summit of a big rock can be crossed (some easy rock climbing passages) or bypassed on the left side (ascending) some 10 meters below it, From the notch a good and (now) well marked path follows the ridge until the summit, the last part is very steep and could be a little tricky if iced. Difference in elevation ~600m time required 1h 30' - 2h 30' depending on the route

Accomodation

the "bivouac" on the summit is fine and clean
you can find there also some chopped firewood ... just remember that all you can find there has been carried there by some old voluntaries ...

why a windy day ???
because from this summit yoy can see the Alps from Monviso to Mischabel group, the Como lake, the groups of Triangolo lariano, the Grigne and, of course, the Resegonev from very near ...
