Re: Mountain oceanthank you! Do you have an idea what mountains can be seen besides Matterhorn?

Re: Mountain oceanMont Blanc is on the left I think and moving to the right the faint (remote) one peeking over some others apparently closer to M.B. rather than Matterhorn is Weisshorn. The one to the left of Matterhorn is the Dent d'H. D^2H loooks as if it has a big right shoulder.

Re: Mountain oceanIt may help to get the longitudes and latitudes of these mtns. M. Pelvoux and the Meije have theirs. The distance function works between peaks with stated co-ordinates.

Re: Mountain oceanI got interested in this case. Therefore I took a picture from Barre des Ecrins two days later that has a wider angle and navigated with dental floss on my road map. Barre is higher so you can see more mountains there and compare them better: You may be right with Weisshorn, but what you think is Montblanc is in fact Grand Casse and for your Dent d’Herens I would guess Aiguille de la Grande Sassière (it is apparently much nearer than Matterhorn!). Not an easy topic…

Re: Mountain oceanThanks, I had no idea your picture subtended such a small angle- after the zoom. I have a book atlas but it gives out just east of the G. Combin. Is the big dark one in the near distance ,right of Matterhorn, Mt. Thabor? Enjoyed the full panorama from the Barre des Ecrins.

Re: Mountain oceanbelieve that right in front of Matterhorn is Grand Roc Noir (3582 m), belonging to Vanoise Group. Never heard of it but that shows my map. Mont Thabor should be even more near, but perhaps a little outside to the right.
