Cordillera Vilcanota

By the end of May 2011 I traveled to the Cordillera Vilcanota. Together with a guide, an assistant guide and a mule driver who doubled as cook, we would spend eight days to hike the Ausangate circuit, and try to climb the mountain. If all would go perfectly, we would have two spare days left and we could try another mountain. I was thinking about Callangate perhaps?

Running out of time

As it turned out, we needed the spare days on Ausangate itself. No time to climb any other mountains. In fact, after the climb we had only two days to get back to civilization from high camp. But it sure is a beautiful climb, well worth a few more days!

Maybe I'll write a trip report about it someday, but until then, here are the photos.

Amazing scenery

Wow, the Vilcanota...remote, wild, dramatic and certainly rivalling with those other two in the north, Blanca and Huayhuash. In fact, it seems to me that the Vilcanota range is more glaciated than the other two...

Yep, the Vilcanota is indeed wild and dramatic! The new road from Cuzco to Tinqui (and beyond) makes it much less remote, so perhaps more mountaineers will find their way to it.

The glaciers are great, and I love looking at those big fluted faces like on Mariposa or Pachanta. The highest peaks of the Cordillera Vilcanota are no less glaciated than those of the Cordillera Blanca, but there are not nearly as many. All in all, I would say that the Vilcanota is more like a smaller version of the Cordillera Blanca. Just as dramatic, but fewer peaks. Still, it's easily big enough to spend a month - or even two - out there.

I haven't been to the Cordillera Huayhuash (yet, anyway), so I can't compare it with that. From what I've read about it and from the pictures I've seen, I think it's more dramatic still!
