Ice climbing at La Gouille

Ice climbing at La Gouille

La Gouille is the name of a small hamlet deep in the Arolla valley. Nearby are a group of icefalls, and as the area is quite high, these usually stay in shape well into March. They are not real steep. The hardest route is WI 5 but the rest is WI 4 and 3. There was snow covering the ice, but that soon came down as we climbed.

Re: Nice...

Yes, we had fun climbing these icefalls. Not all routes were formed, and some had too much snow on them, but there was plenty left to do for us.

After a few days it got too warm though, and so we went skiing and snowshoeing instead. I'll make a couple of albums for that later. More precisely, Jan went skiing and I went snowshoeing, because I have no experience with skiing off piste. I really should learn that though, for it would sure make the descent so much more fun, and a lot easier.
