Whenmy wife and I climbed the Allalin in 1964, there was no Metro under the ice of the Fee-glacier, and it was 1200 m/4000 ft. up from the Längfluh hut!

Re: WhenYes, it is really cheating a bit - but to make things a little better we did traverse the mountain, descending a harder and longer route than we went up - and then we climbed the Strahlhorn 'properly', next day!
I guess the Alps has changed a bit since 1964... my first alpine climbs were in 1973 - also a long time ago.
