Mount Round Overview

"Morion" means Mount round or rounded. But also a Mountain with its surroundings, like a King or a Queen with its neighboring and less important Vassals.
In fact, if we look at the Morion Chain, between the Valpelline Ollomont Valley, we find that as "round" there is very little. Indeed anything. Only sharp, acute and slender spiers.
Three Morions, "Morion" par excellence in Aosta Valley, from all parts that you observe appear difficult, impenetrable, repulsive and unappealing. So there are none or very few.
But exist even "Morions more sweeter", like what in front on the opposite side and at the foot of Salliousa or in the adjacent Valley of St. Barthélemy just above Lignan.
These Morions are more "human" and well-liked by pastors who like to locate places of their pastures by giving them names that identify the precise locations. Why is there then must send their "beiciullets or beiciuns", ie the little shepherds who must look after the herds of cows. Or chasing the flocks of sheep on the steep meadows and "crazy goats" on dangerous precipices. Old story that not "caring" of the mountaineers and above them a long time. "Morion" significa Monte rotondo od arrotondato. Ma anche una Montagna col suo circondario, come un Re o Regina coi suoi attigui e men altolocati Vassalli.
Infatti se guardiamo la Catena del Morion, tra la Valpelline e la Valle di Ollomont, ci accorgiamo che di "tondo" esiste veramente poco. Anzi proprio nulla. Soltanto guglie aguzze.
I tre Morions, il "Morion" per antonomasia in Valle di Aosta, da ogni parte che lo si osservi appare ostico, impenetrabile, repulsivo e poco invitante. Così nessun o ci van pochi.
Ma esistono anche dei Morion "più dolci", come quello che gli stà davanti sul lato opposto ed ai piedi della Salliousa oppure nella Valle di St. Barthélemy appena sopra Lignan.
Sono dei Morions più "umani" e benvoluti dai Pastori che amano individuare i luoghi dei lor pascoli attribuendogli nome, tal da identificare quella precisa località. Perché lì poi debbon mandar i loro "beiciullets o beiciuns", cioè i pastorelli che debbon accudir mandrie di mucche. Oppur rincorrer greggi di pecore sui ripidi prati e le " capre pazze" sovra i pericolosi sospesi dirupi. Storia antica che "se ne frega" degli alpinisti precedendoli di molto tempo. Perché non son questi che han "inventato l'Alpe" e neppur colonizzato la medesima, anche nei suoi posti più reconditi ed impervi. Anche se poi molti di quei pastorelli son diventati bravi Alpinisti e fortissime Guide. Iniziando proprio dal rude pascolo.

Qui arrivavano dal Comboé i pastori con i manzi fino allo inizio del '900, andando ad ispezionare la soprastante "Raye du Morion", cioé quella larga crepaccia terrosa che poi avrebbe generato la frana. Oggi tutto é stato abbandonato ed il Morion é rimasto in vita solo perché sui suoi fianchi scendono due cascate ghiacciate che negli Anni Ottanta hanno richiamato forti Scalatori in ghiaccio come i piemontesi di Torino ed Ivrea Giancarlo Grassi e Carlo Stratta. Poi, complice la frana, sono scomparsi proprio quasi tutti. Dalla cordata Michele Baratono-Federico Chabod-Mario Schiagno del Luglio 1920 sulla Parete Nord alle successive. Con un rigurgito in snowboard da parte di due giovani valdostani sulla Parete Nord della "Becca", Via Giulio Adolfo Ourlaz detto "Dulo", nel Maggio 2014 ...

Ma esiste anche un Morion "più tranquillo". Se andate al "Rifugio degli Angeli" in Valgrisenche passate, arrivando da Settentrione, dai Laghi del Morion, sotto quello che una volta era il "Rifugio Clea Scavarda" costruito nel 1937 ed ancora in tempi più remoti il militare "Refuge du Morion". Se poi da qui volete raggiungere la Testa del Rutor dovete obbligatoriamente attraversare il soprastante "Glacier du Morion". Il tutto presso un vicino promontorio roccioso conosciuto da sempre e da tutti come "il Morion" ...

From an ancient and latine "Mons Rotundus" ...

Questo toponimo deriva dal latino "Mons Rotundus". Che a sua volta deriva da "rota", cioé ruota. Ad indicare un qualcosa di circolare. Come il "Monte Rotondo" (2572 m) ai piedi della piramide della La Salliaousa (3328 m), che per una volta tanto non se la son sentita di francesizzare in Morion. Però ci han provato facendo ricorso ai radicali "Mor e Morgex", che significano mucchio di pietre; oppure al radicale celtico "Rion o Riot", che stà ad indicare un pascolo nuovo. Così hanno paragonato l'antico e spezzato Mont Rion al più recente Pra Rion ovvero un pascolo da poco tempo riscoperto e raggiunto da un buon sentiero. Appoggiandosi al mitico Toponomastico Abbé Joseph Marie Henry che affermava che un pascolo non può essere rotondo, altrimenti impossibile da irrigare con gli squadrati ruscelli. Perché, i ruscelli non possono scorrere in circolo? Anche i grandi fiumi compiono delle giravolte con curve arrotondate e grandi anse. Ma ci viene in aiuto la vicina, a Settentrione, Testa d'Ariondet (3485 m) che, collocata sulla Cresta Nordest del Mont Velan (3734 m), presenta da questa parte un'aspra e molto ripida, quasi verticale, parete rocciosa alta più di 700 metri e sull'opposto il ripido ed esteso Glacier de Valsorey. Anche facendo ricorso al radicale de Riondet, non mi sembra posto adatto al pascolo e son quasi certo che anche le vacche lì non ci voglion andare. Per contro e volendo schierarsi con l'Abbé, subito a Meridione troviamo il tondeggiante Mont Saron o Mont Champ-Rion (2681 m) ed al Breuil, al di sotto del Cervino o Matterhorn, esiste Lo Riondé che qualcuno chiama, non del tutto correttamente, come l'Oriondé. Rientrando nel solco esplicitamente tracciato all'inizio, dobbiamo ritornare alla grande e rocciosa Catena dei Morions, ove troviamo anche il Colle de Morion (3445 m) ma soprattutto il Campanile del Morion (3470 m) che ci chiariscon ogni dubbio. Con le morene e Glacier du Mont Gelé da una parte e pietraie della Comba Faudery dall'altra non par posto per pascolar e neppur per inviar sù mucche "a spasso" da ste parti più che selvagge.
