Adding to this a bitLots of tours go here from Cusco, Peru. They started in recent years when this ridge of colors was uncovered from the glacier that used to cover it for many years. The hike is now 7 km or about 4.5 miles round trip from where you exit the tour bus. Tour buses pick you up around 3-5 am (some as early as 2 am) to start this day trip and stop for breakfast along the way driving two hours before and after eating (4 hours total). This hike is often muddy due to high rainfall so be prepared. the high altitude change can cause altitude sickness and sunburn. Your guide will provide oxygen and coca leaves if you feel sick. The hike gains 600 metres (about 2,000 ft) to peak at 5,200 metres (17,060 ft).
