City mountain.  Sucess!

Every year at least 10 000 people climb Cherni Vrah, the highest peak of Vitosha Mt. Most of them do this at least 2-3 times per year =)

Brings back memories  Sucess!

I love Vitosha. It's a small, family friendly mountain that makes a great day trip. It's a perfect place if you want to get away from the tourist traps in the city center of Sofia and see some nature. (Please note: not all areas in Bulgaria are safe to hike in but this one is because it is pretty crowded)

For me, Vitosha is packed with fond memories. I first climbed it with my dad and some of his friends when I was 7. It became a tradition and every summer we went to visit my grandparents in Bulgaria we also did Vitosha. Dad used to climb the peak with his dad when he was little.
The last time I went up Vitosha was in 2004. Dad, his cousin and I were almost run over by an 80+ year old man who hurried up the path. Other hikers told us he has been running up the peak from the bottom to the top every weekend for the last 40 years. No taking lifts, no pauzing. For stories like these, I love Vitosha. :)

I studied geomorphology

so while trekking around in Bulgaria in 1979 (Stara Planina and NW Rila), I came here to have a look at the famous (geomorphologists will call'em famous:-) stone rivers (e.g. Zlatnite Mostove)

Good Memories

Cool mist on the mountain, a wide hand-laid cobblestone way leading past chalets and cabins. No one around...guess we got lucky. Good hike on the plateau, stone rivers and all. Unearthly views of Sofia far below. A world-class hotel and club is located about half way up on the north slope. Walked the ridgeline but did not summit this peak.
