Waiting on the Old Man, Black Canyon of the Gunnison

My son, Curtis, waits for me to catch up during the descent from Green Mountain at Black Canyon of the Gunnision National Park, CO. I was stopping here and there to take a few pictures. Curtis is perched atop Painted Wall. That's more than a 2,000' drop to the canyon bottom, making it the highest cliff in the state. Some of the rock coloration that gives Painted Wall its name is visible on Exclamation Point at the top, left of the image. Taken in August 2006.

Too close for comfort

for me. It's cool however that you went to the north side to get a whole different perspective. I was more in awe at Black Canyon than Grand Canyon believe it or not

You really do get some different perspectives--much better IMHO--from that hike out to Green Mountain and Exclamation Point than anything on the south side. For another canyon that will probably impress you more than GC, visit Canyonlands National Park, and most especially The Maze District. To get a view of GC somewhat reminiscent of the Black, take the drive out to Toroweap/Tuweep. Another great view of GCNP (but technically Marble Canyon) is available after the drive out to Tatahatso Pt (special permit from Navajo Nation is required).
