Watchman Scramble Crux Moves

Watchman Scramble Crux Moves

The lower band of rock on the West Face of The Watchman is the crux of the scramble. This section went at a solid Class 4. This way is just to the left of a prominent deep and narrow crack at the base of the Wst Face. Just to the right of this crack is a slightly easier way (Class 3+), we discovered on the descent.

Somebody left a fixed rope

On 3/21/09 we found a short fixed rope below where the the climber is in this picture. Unfortunately it didn't go all the way up the pitch. We had a rope and chose to set up a quick belay on the way up and rapped off a tree on the way down. I think it'd be rated 5.2ish by Colorado standards.

Too Bad

I'm no hard guy climber at all, but one of the coolest parts of this scramble was having to do this section with no rope. I thought at the time it was tough 4th, but that could easily be low 5th class. Just to the right of this we found (down climbing) an even easier way- probably 3rd-4th class slick rock drainage type thing. Thanks for the update and checking out my stuff!
