West Arete of Winchell

West Arete of Winchell

West Arete of Mt. Winchell the way we climbed it. 'Climbing California's High Sierra' shows a different start for this route (going to the right lower fork of the main arete instead of the left one). Alternative to our route looked significantly more difficult and fairly blank. Definitely harder than listed Grade III, 5.8 rating. The way we came can probably be rated Grade III+, 5.9. - July 2007 Photo (c) by Pavel Kovar

Re: nice!!!!

Hey Jeff1 it is nice to hear from you. 10d eh? I wonder if they took the right fork from the "1st pitch". That section of the nearby arete certainly looked difficult and way harder than what we climbed.

Nice Photo

This looks like a really fun route. Just did Agassiz finding some fun 3rd class variations with a couple easy 5th class moves. Was looking at Winchell thinking that even though it's lower in elevation, it's a more desirable climb. This route looks like it could be a Sierra classic.
