West Butte

West Butte

Peakrat76 climbing the East Face of the West Butte. Four or Five rusty iron spikes (not pitons) of unknown vintage were used for protection/aid. We had no technical climbing ability or knowledge when these climbs were made, and were, therefore very lucky to have had success on several climbs of this Butte. The iron spikes have apparently been gone for some years. April 12, 1968.

that's intense

I was out there today and was wondering if there is a feasible way up West. I bet it would be pretty scary nowadays. Were the holds really loose, or semi-solid? How was the downclimb?

Hmmm...

I'm thinking I need to go walk around this again and see if I can get up there. Nice photo!
