Twice in 4 days  Sucess!

I had to get this one before leaving Lake City. After having to turn around from 13,800` due to storms on the second part of the Uncompahgre/Wetterhorn combo 3 days before I summited without problems on a magnificent sunny day. I was supposed to do San Luis on this day but that one can wait. It was the last of the 5 14ers in the area that I climbed.

Fun climb with Tom Day of Morrison, Colorado. We crossed over and climbed Uncompahgre too. Super fun summit pitch and a beautiful day.

sweet peak!  Sucess!

We had high winds and snow in the morning, but as we neared the summit, it was clearing quickly. We continued on to Matterhorn and Broken Hill that day.

standard route  Sucess!

I always say that the summit pitch has more intimidating exposure than any 14er I've done so far (except Sunlight's summit block).

Summer & Winter  Sucess!

7/2/05 - Climbed the standard route from Matterhorn Creek TH. Fun scramble with a great finish. Continued on to Uncompahgre afterwards. Long day.

1/10/10 - Winter summit! Backpacked to a bit past Matterhorn Creek TH (over 7 miles) and climbed Wetterhorn the following day following more or less the standard route. Tough but very rewarding summit!

One of the finest peaks...  Sucess!

...that I never saw (we climbed it in the clouds). I do remember some terrific columbines along the trail, and some fun scramblilng to reach the summit. I'd love to go back some day and experience the radical dropoffs and tremendous views I have seen in the pictures.

AKA "Ladderhorn"   Sucess!

Climbed from Matterhorn TH attempting to do Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre on the same day. Ran into a bit of dehydration/sickness before reaching the ridge. Decided to stick to Wetterhorn and was able to push through and summit. Actual climb was not as hard as expected, with the final summit pitch feeling like taking a ladder to the top. Thoroughly enjoyed the summit and amazing views surrounding us. A bittersweet moment to gaze upon beautiful Uncompahgre. Next time!

Easy Breezy Beautiful Wetterhorn  Sucess!

Best-laid plans had us climbing Wetterhorn in the wee hours of the morning, followed by the hulking mass of Uncompahgre around noon. While the weather held and puffy cumulus remained cheerful, some of our party could not make both peaks. Unwilling to abandon the others, I chose to savor the slopes of Wetterhorn and leave Uncompahgre for another trip. This peak was much easier than expected, delivering only a short, docile class 3 section just below the summit.

Aesthetic 14er  Sucess!

Solid rock and a fun summit pitch. The scrambling was so fun, it ended too abruptly. Also scrambled to the top of the Ship's Prow for a good view of the other climbers coming down the summit pitch.

Wetterhorn Peak (Colorado)  Sucess!

Climbed via the Southeast Ridge from Matterhorn Creek. Saw many marmots from where the trail first reached treeline all the way to the summit. Good rock and near-perfect weather make this a hike to remember. The views of neighboring Uncompahgre and the central San Juans were incredible.

Climbed Wetterhorn via SE ridge route. Good conditions on the ridge and its east side. There is still some snow/ice on the west side of the ridge. The final gully section was dry. Good weather, great views!

09/06/2010: Climbed Wetterhorn/Matterhorn combo from Henson Creek Road. Perfect weather, nice hike/scramble, - great day in San Juans!
