Up the North Ridge, down the Blowhole  Sucess!

On a whim (and knowing that Sean had done it a few years back), I headed up the North Ridge directly off the Colby Pass trail in a dayhike from the Marvin Pass TH. I'd update Sean's beta to say that it's mostly class 2-3 but with around half a dozen easy fifth class down climbs and traverses (he only mentioned "4th class boulder problems", which there were probably a few of, as well). The 3 miles of ridge ended up taking me the better part of 5 hours as I climbed up dead-end gendarmes and worked some short fifth class sections over huge air. Getting down the Blowhole route was straightforward for me until wherever the turn-off is to avoid down climbing the fourth class slabs like Bob Burd ran into. The slabs went and they were no big deal compared to the difficulties and exposure of the ridge but the rest of the Blowhole route is pleasantly easy and unexposed. Anyway, the long time I spent on the ridge precluded a visit to Glacier Ridge while still finishing the dayhike at a reasonable hour but looking up at the incredibly aesthetic North Ridge on the way back to Big Wet Meadow I'll remember it as a proud send.

North ridge  Sucess!

A long-ish dayhike of this and Glacier Ridge out of Marvin Pass. The ridge is mostly class 2-3, easy to follow, and both aesthetic and fun. I tried to go down Eckert's Blowhole but, failing to find it, instead made some low 5th class thing work. Trip report.

Eckert's Blowhole  Sucess!

Fun three day backpack in from Marvin Pass TH with a bit of weather thrown in.

Once you're in the Blowhole things are fairly straightforward with a few fun but short 3rd class bits but we had some issues getting to that point. We ended up to far to the north along the ridge (but still before the trees) which led to some 4th class cracks and slabs but looked like it might have worked. Once we realized our error and hit the right ramp things went smoothly.

You can take a ramp to the left of the gully that skips the harder than 3rd class bits mentioned above.

Blowhole Route  Sucess!

Improbable and amazing route. However, the glaciated gully leading to the beginning of the route is a bit harder than Class 3.

East Face/West Face  Sucess!

Long dayhike out of Marvin Pass TH. Went up the East Face and down Eckert's Blowhole route on the West Face. Eckert's route is very cool and the better of the two class 3 options, imho. Trip Report

East Face  Sucess!

A fun climb to the top of a really cool looking peak. The summit ridge was more airy than I though it would be which made it all the better. Sweet climb!
