Long Day
A rollercoaster of altitude and weather.

I need oxygen
Left from Las Cruces (Elevation 4,000ft) early in the morning and got to the trail at 11. When I got to the ridge a thunderstorm rolled in so I ran down to the tree line and waited it out. After about an hour of pouring rain and hail the storm passed. After that I went to the summit. My lungs felt terrible. gaining over 9,000 feet in less than half a day kills the lungs. It was still worth it though.

really great hike
Went up Bull of the Woods, and down Williams lake. The last two miles on the road were pretty rough on the legs. Lots of marmots and bighorn sheep to keep you company. My 10th state HP!
I hiked up Wheeler Peak with my Dad in the late 90s.

Bull both ways
Started a little later than we wanted (8:30) but had a good day and the afternoon storms never really amounted to much. The route is pretty long at over 15 miles and we had flown in from Minneapolis the night before so the altitude played a bigger role than normal for us. The sheep were everywhere. We were walking right through herds of a dozen or more multiple times. Pretty cool.

rainy hike
Hiked up solo during a soggy summer day. Didn't see anyone else but did see a few marmots and mountain goats along the way. Pretty neat vegetation and trees in this area. Didn't get too many views due to the clouds and fog, but still had a great hike.

NM Highpoint
Trail up from Williams Lake was easy to follow, just a bit steep up the talus, but not bad. Slept in my car at the parking by the ski area the night before, it was so nice to feel the cool, thin mountain air after a summer in the Midwest (Kansas City).
Up Bull of the woods and down to Williams lake made for a scenic hike.

Weather Window
Drove in and arrived at the parking lot about 7a. It had snowed the night before, and I was on snow for most of the hike above 10000'. Very windy on the ridges, but had the mountain all to myself for the entire day. Didn't see people until I was within a mile of the car. Round-trip about 7 hours with lots of postholing and breaks for photos and lunch.
a great day! Friday April 1st...taking advantage of the low snow pack this year we were able to access the summit via Williams Lake with switchback kick stepping. It was possible to climb wheeler april 1st. wow. beautiful...and fresh tracks for the most part. lot of post holing on the bull-of-the-woods trail return, though! and the winds! wow! keep your hat on tight!

Blown back by wind
Made it up to summit ridge, but didn't get to summit proper due to tremendous winds.
All five of us reached the summit successfully after camping out the previous two nights at Middle Fork Lake and Lost Lake. I can say with confidence that this is only the beginning of my climbing career. (;
