I hiked this one with John & Kathy Mitchler under perfect weather conditions. My wife Lori accompanied us to Williams Lake and waited there while we summitted and then came back. I have visited several county highpoints with John and he and Kathy are always fun to hike or hang out with.

Williams Lake Trail
My first big mountain hike. RT at 5hr 40min. Love the crisp fresh air. Weather was perfect. I was glad that the altitude didn't bother me.
New Mexico is beautiful in the fall, and this climb was easy and scenic. Also tagged Mt Walter across the little saddle while I was there.

Nearly a 14er
I camped in one of the first come first serve campsites near The Bull of The Woods Trail along Twining Road and got an early start the next morning. After summitting, I descended the Williams Lake Trail into Taos for some nummy food. Take trekking poles for Williams Lake Trail, it is steep with some lengthy scree fields.

Good standard day hike. Very cold at the summit in October, though. There were these white grayish birds that were oddly friendly... don't know their names though.

Fantastic day of hiking to the top of New Mexico
My sister met me in New Mexico to climb to the top of Mount Wheeler. We got a reasonably early start on the Bull-of-the-Woods trail and got briefly lost crossing Frazier mountain. We had a beautiful day and saw plenty of wildlife, including marmots, chipmunks, and pikas at the top and a tiny herd of bighorn sheep about an hour and a half from the summit. We were exhausted and happy to see the summit. We took the Williams Lake trail on the way down to avoid a coming thunderstorm and got hailed on in the last two miles.

Beautiful day to reach the highpoint of New Mexico. Took the Williams Lake route to the top. Then headed over to Walter before heading down.

Via the Williams Lake route. This was my first real high-elevation climb and I was completely under-prepared. I remember there was still a lot of snow and that the windchill got to me.

Super windy at the top, stayed in a motel at ski resort and hit up Eske's Brewery in Taos, tried green chile beer for the first time
Second time, this time Rachael, Scot and I started from Williams Lake trailhead. We summited Wheeler, Simpson, "Fairchild", Lake Fork and Kachina and then descended the ski area back to the car. Some fun scrambly sections between Simpson and "Fairchild" and again to get up Lake Fork. Enjoyed some food in Taos afterwards.

Cold day on top of New Mexico
Fantastic day on the slopes of this gentle giant. The view from the top seems to be absolutely endless, and trying to find traces of civilization is not easy. We were blessed with a deep blue sky and some ice-cold wind.

Perfect day for Wheeler. Went up Williams Lake trail, there was some snow on the trail but it was packed powder and I had no need for the microspikes or crampons. Trail was easy to follow, reached the summit in under 2 hrs, saw a small group of Bighorn sheep near the top. Went down Bull-of-the-Woods, there was ankle deep snow on much of this route. I was glad I was going down and not up!

Super Fantastic Hike
Drove from Grantsville UT, all night on Wed the 5th to Mt. Elbert in CO. Got in at 2am and was up at 6:30 am. Summited Elbert that morning and drove all the way to trailhead of Wheeler, NM that same day. Was up at sunrise and was the 2nd person on top of Wheeler for the day. Gorgeous hike. Loved everything minus the part through the ski-resort. Signs made it easy to navigate through there. Drove all the way to Black Mesa in OK that afternoon. Summited Black Mesa the next morning and drove all the way to Mt. Magaizine in AR and summited it on Sunday morning and drove to St. Louis to start a grad school program. Back to Back to Back to Back state high points. Was a good road trip.

6th Summit (I think)
This was my second ascent from the William's Lake Trail. Rate of ascent is more difficult than other trails (Bull of the Woods and Lost Lake).

Bagged NM Highpoint
Came up Bull-of-the-Woods trail and returned via Williams Lake trail. Overcast and windy on top, but it was nice to get New Mexico's high point. Lots of others seemed to have the same idea that day (after a couple of days of rain).

Hiked into Bull of the Woods pasture and setup camp Saturday night. Only a few scattered dry spots to pitch a tent, otherwise snowy.
With some recent snow and freeze thaw, I could not locate the new summit trail. Then I Lost Bull of the Woods trail after the Red River overlook and ended up on a set of cross country trails until I hit Fraser Peak Road. From the 'top of the world' I was able to scramble up Fraser Peak off trail to get above treeline and rejoin the trail.
Easy snow travel until ~11am when it started to soften up. I used microspikes and it was plenty, snow shoes maybe useful for afternoon, but overkill for AM. Crossed some big snowfields- not technical but lots of work with the switchbacks covered in snow.
Extreme windchill on the ridge and summit of Wheeler Peak! Also, amazing views of big snowy mountains all around.
Glissaded ~1000 ft down Williams trail. Was nice to have the iceaxe for sliding-on-butt self arrest and when looking down the east face of the ridge, but definitely not needed.
Quite slushy below the lake, but tracked out and easy to find trail.
Awesome blue sky day with lots of snow travel and hourly sunscreen application.

Bull-of-the-Woods up and Williams Lake down. Lots of wind. Lots of snow in the lower reaches of the mountains but not much above treeline. Great hike.
