Striking peak!
Outstanding area, climbed with foo-foo bear, fun climb and snow on summit!! Continued on to summit Jeff Davis peak. Loved GBNP and this trip was followed by a delightful tour of some Nevada hot springs!

Wheeler
Took the standard route up with my friend Brian after a couple days of eating nothing but apples, salami, crackers, and beer. Had the peak to ourselves. The snowpack was far lower than it was in July of 2011.

Burly
An exhausting ascent in soft snow. Lots of post-holing even while wearing snowshoes. Wind on the ridgeline was fierce. Summit log indicated only one other winter ascent since November 2014. Views at the top were absolutely spectacular.
to sign the register when this was the highest peak in the State!

Perfect Day
Clear Day, no wind on top. A little snow on the trial from 12,500 to top. 6 people climbing on a Friday. Great place to hike, well marked trail, no permits or regulations to deal with and clear views in all directions.
Was the first to make the summit that day but it was extremely cold and windy, thought I was going to get blown off the ridge. Also the summit was off and on in clouds but it cleared later in the morning. As I was back down in the forest it looked like storms were moving in.

NV COHP #17 of 17
Hiked Wheeler Peak along with the Grafton liner the previous day to complete my NV COHP project! Great peak to finish up on. The weather looked threatening on the ascent but nothing came of it. The views are stunning and the hike isn't too hard. Camped in the upper Lehman CG and got a bit of rain the night before. All-in-all a wonderful park and peak... I will be back.

Cold and windy, but kicked my way to the summit. Took a few quick photos and headed back down. Only one other climber on the mountain that day.

Long drive from home
Left Pasco at 3pm, made it to Wells and got a $50 special at the super 8 around 11pm. Lost my debit card, and didn't leave wells until after 6am, which meant I arrived at the trailhead a little late, just after 9am. Decided to go for it anyway, even with thunderstorms rolling up the valley to the west. Summited around 11, thunderstorms overtook the mountain around 11:10. I managed to run down to treeline from the summit in probably 10-15 minutes. There was at least 7 people I counted still up above 12k feet when the torrential rains set in. For being kind of a mild hike, it was an adventure. Wheeler Peak has been near the top of my to do list for 5 years now, happy to have experienced it. Fully deserving of its National Park status. Anyway, 1500 miles of driving in a 48 hour window with two peaks bagged, a new record for me.

Via Wheeler Peak Trail
Needing some elevation training for the upcoming Sierra season, we headed to eastern Nevada to climb one of the giants of the Great Basin, Mr. Wheeler. Drove all night Friday from LA, set up camp, then hiked to the top. No sleep, 600+ mi drive, coming from sea level. Felt surprisingly good. Temps were nice and the views absolutely fantastic. Had no energy to add nearby Jeff Davis Peak. Enjoyed the rest of the day by hiking up to the bristlecone pine grove. Toured Lehman Caves before driving back the next day. Great Basin NP is just fabulous!
The second of three neighboring peaks, Bald, then Wheeler, and the more difficult Jeff Davis. Hail and thunderstorms chased us down earlier than we would have liked.

Ten weeks post op!
Ten weeks from my hip replacement to the summit - I took it slow and steady. Saw deer high on the ridge and lots of flowers above 12,000 feet. Slight rain on the way down, great views.

Wandered up with my nephew on June 29, 2013. What a pretty cirque the west face of Wheeler and the north face of Jeff Davis peaks make! Hard to believe there is a glacier this face south!

Up the snow gully
Started on the main trail and detoured up a snow gully to the summit ridge with a group from the Idaho Hiking Club. Very windy!
