White Mountain  Sucess!

Started before the sun came up, so I got to watch the sunrise over the Great Basin and the full moon set over the Sierra Nevada simultaneously. Pretty awesome stuff really

Road  Sucess!

3:08 round trip from the gate. Forgot to eat anything beforehand, so more painful than expected! Great, alien scenery though.

The Sublime Whites  Sucess!

Hiked up the usual route from the trailhead before the research station. Arrived at 2 after a day spent meandering around Schulman and Patriarch, looking at the mightily old Bristlecone pines. A thunderstorm broke out to the east, lightening close by and thunder roaring from the hill immediately above me so I dipped down below the trail and cut across. Passed hikers fleeing the peak but I decided since I made it all the way there I'd continue onward. Ran up the last section of the peak since I could feel the static in the air and reached the summit with a fantastic view of the thunderstorm striking below to the east in Nevada. Sublime scenery and a look at the Great Basin. Despite the ease of climbing it via the standard route (around 3000' gain roundtrip, around 15 mi), this was a surprisingly awesome summit. I ran down much of the peak and hiked home, arriving at my car in time for sunset and getting a taste of the amazing stargazing of the Whites on my drive back to Bishop. The first 14'er I've climbed, hopefully many to come.

White Mountain Peak  Sucess!

Standard route past the research center. Highlights were the flat tire on the drive in and the large group of big horn sheep near the road.

Mountain bike  Sucess!

I left Bend, OR on Monday. I was on the summit the next day with my mountain bike. I was planning to hang-out at the gate and putter around, and go for the summit the next day. However, I rode up to the Barcroft Science Station, and I felt really good. So I continued on.

From gate to summit: 2 hours 45 minutes.
Summit to gate: less than 90 minutes.

I had to push the bike up the "scree" like conditions of the "road" the last 1/2 mile. I did ride down the whole way. It was a blast riding from the summit of a 14,000+ foot mountain. My first 14er on a mountain bike.

This was a warm-up for Mt. Whitney two days later.

WARNING! The rocks are sharp! After leaving the gate and heading back to Bishop, a tire was destroyed by a rock that was embedded deep. The people at Bishop Automotive told me that Silver Canyon and White Mountain Road sends them a lot of business. I took the WM road route.

First 14er!  Sucess!

Did this as a warm up for Langley and Whitney later this summer. Grandview was full when we rolled in around 9pm on a Friday night from San Jose. After some searching lower down we came back up and camped at a nice spot just about a 1/2 mile up the road on the east side to acclimatize. Did well with the elevation but the mileage was getting to me in the last few miles. Total time was 8 hours with an hour on the summit. Weather was perfect, didn't sweat and didn't get cold with just a long sleeve shirt on. Views are amazing all around. Tons of marmots and saw my first Sky Pilot at about 13800'. someday

I've now been to or near the trailhead 3 times and as far as the pavement goes a half dozen times. Vehicle problems or unambitious travel companions have kept me from the peak each time. I'll get up there eventually. The views are nice even without summitting.

West Ridge  Sucess!

There's a reason why people do not climb often the west ridge (not the "normal" south-west ridge) of white mountain! Long outing, but well worth it. Cabins at Black Eagle camp are awesome! Trip report here.

First at 14,000  Sucess!

Semeed like a long haul from Barcroft Gate (especially on the way back) but good weather, a good friend, sweeping views of the Eastern Sierras and the fact this was my first 14er made this a memorable hike.

Another First For Me  Sucess!

My first 14'er. Quite happy. Slept in, slow poked it on the way up, was treated with a beautiful sunset just before getting back to the car. Awesome.

well worth it  Sucess!

Relatively easy (compared to Shasta which is my only other 14er), but still uphill and thin air for sure. Was glad I had a couple of extra layers for the way back

Holy windchill batman

Decided to take advantage of the dry weather and hike White Mountain. The drive to the trailhead was clear and fine (came up Silver Canyon in a Tundra). No snow problems on the road (in January - crazy!). Started off for the summit in a comfortable 27 degrees. By the time we got over the ridge behind Barcroft the wind was blasting. At the saddle below the final switchbacks the wind and dropping temperatures finally got to be too much and we turned around. One in our party made the summit, another got just below it and turned around after practically being blown off the peak. Kestrel readings: 10 degree air temp, -19.4 degree windchill, sustained 40mph winds.

So, there is more to climbing in the winter than just snow. Who knew.
