Altitude sickness   Sucess!

Easy hike but the altitude got to me at the switchbacks. My dog motivated me to the top. Pretty cool me and my dog got enjoy the summit. I don't think she had altitude sickness.

Last Day of Summer = SNOW  Sucess!

Boring slog turned interesting by the waves of rain/hail/graupel that rolled over. Cold, windy (of course) with a tasty beer on the summit with my sweet friend. CHECK!

No Snow.  Sucess!

Not a lick of snow on this dry September day. Climbed Mount Barcroft afterwards.

Great hike  Sucess!

Drove up from Ventura with Mebo1126 and had a really nice hike. Lots of sunshine, not a cloud in the sky. Plenty of wind though! Lots of hikers for the Labor Day weekend but certainly not overwhelming. We left the research station at 7 am and reached the summit at 10:40. Road going in was pretty rough...

Labor Day Hike  Sucess!

Enjoyed this 14er on a sunny but windy day. Was thankful that the gate was open. Though this was an "easy" 14er, I still wouldn't call it an easy hike.

White Mountain Peak  Sucess!

Not surprisingly this is a very crowded mountain. I camped at the Barcroft gate and was up and moving before anyone else. I made the summit in less than three hours and hung out up there for an hour. Before heading down I scrambled down to the White Mountains wilderness area highpoint. I passed upwards of 50 people while hiking down. Also on the way down I made the sidetrip over to Mount Barcroft. This was my third 14er, Whitney and Shasta my other two.

Pefect Day!  Sucess!

Summitted with my oldest son Justin and his dog Aspen. We started at 4:30 to do most of the hike on the way up without the sun beating down on us, and summitted at 7:45. Good move! Was able to see a herd of Bighorn sheep right in the saddle before the summit. The ease of access, no need for permitting, and not having to share the trail with hundreds of other hikers makes this hike a no brainer. This is a day hiker's wet dream!

2nd 14ner  Sucess!

Perfect day, started 2:PM. Back to car at 8:15. 3 hours & 24 minutes from gate to summit. I went from sea level to summit of White Mountain so fast, I got altitude sickness. My GPS said almost 15 miles round trip. This should've been and easy hike but it turned out an absolute pain. The altitude sickness didn't hit me until I was on my way down, probably 4-5 miles to car. On top of it, on my way down to Bishop, I took the Silver Canyon Rd: very difficult, even going down, even on an SUV. I'll probably write a trip review for this just to tell the troubles I put myself through. But hey, I bagged a 14ner!

Bighorn Sheep and Surprise Snow  Sucess!

1st of my 2014 California 14ers. Encountered two herds of bighorn sheep. Two large snowfields blocked the road just below 14,000 feet. A use trail was developing.

Spectacular views  Sucess!

We didn't encounter any scrambling. There's a trail all the way to the top from the Barcroft gate where we camped & started the hike.

From Barcroft Gate  Sucess!

#1 06-17-14 Talk about your wind! 20-30 mph from the west and 34 degrees - non-stop - made for a test of will. With Brent & Dave. Greg persevered to 13,000' and stopped the madness for himself. Otherwise a nice little adventure. IVD? Of course! #2 05-30-21 W/ Lana. Final peak of a 6-day trip which included Mount Langley and Telescope Peak. NE winds were cold (it was 35 degrees when we started at 4:35) & they persisted all day. Patches of snow especially after entering the wilderness. The switchbacks were about 50% covered with 2"-5" of lingering snow. We donned microspikes at 13,500' and went pretty much straight up the shoulder. Car camping at the TH is always interesting. We used our Montero as a wind break for our tent and it worked well.

From Barcroft  Sucess!

Took advantage of open gate day to Barcroft, but drove from Nevada that day, so didn't start until noon. Kids (age 1 and 2) got to ~13k. elev. Wife took them back to the car cause it was nap time.

West Ridge winter dayhike  Sucess!

Complete West Ridge completed solo as a 16 hour dayhike. What a majestic, monstrous ridge with 10,000 ft. of gain....wild with sustained knife edge and route obstacles in winter starting at or just below the 13,000 ft. level. as I did not bring ice axe or crampons, and wore running shoes, I had to do some 4th class climbing to get around some steep and exposed snow traverses.

Ice cold winds at the summit and just below it. What a beautiful expansive view of winter atop the white mountain summit. It is such a privilege to summit these peaks in winter, they have such a desolate and abandoned feel.

Absolutely brutal...and it seemed like ages to get down the final 4,000 ft.

20 mile day  Sucess!

A snow drift blocked the road about 3 miles before the gate so it was 10 miles up and 10 miles back on a short autumn day. Beautiful colors of red, white, brown, and black on the main summit massif. Wow. Everyone says what a yawner this peak is. Not so, definitely worth the time and effort.

Solo morning hike  Sucess!

I drove up to the gate after hiking Split Mtn. It took forever in a Hyundai Tiburon, but I made it. I found a spot to sleep in the ditch next to the trail. I woke up and headed out before 5:00 a.m. Nice peaceful walk up to the top by my lonesome for my 8th 14'er.

Great Day Hike  Sucess!

The worst part of the whole climb is the road getting in. I had 2 car sick passengers. The up and down is a bit challenging, but all in all there were smiles all around
