Labor Day Hike
The altitude research lab on the mountain had an open house the day we climbed. They set up stations along the route to measure hikers blood oxygen levels, heart rate... It was fun to see how we all compared. My blood oxygen was 90% (lived in LA) and I felt fine. My friends was 88% and he had a huge headache.

The Boring Route
Not really a mountaineering experience.. just a boring slog up a dirt road. I ran most of the way back to the car. I vow to go back some day and do the route up from Bishop.

Almost Blown off
This was my last altitude climb before Kilimanjaro. We got to within 1000 ft of the summit, and called it a day due to the very high winds. I weigh 125 and I was being thrown around like a kite! It was fun though :)

Acclimitize
Acclimitization trip before Rainier the following week. Snowed on us at the gate. Walked through the night and hit the summit about 5:30 AM. Nice sunrise. Great View. Windy and sunny on summit. No sign of snow from previous day.

Via Barcroft Gate
My 1st 14er. *^_^*
Spent a night at the trailhead. Boy, this whole area felt so exotic. Really cool. Loved the bristlecone pines.
Didn't encounter the "notorious" marmots but saw two mt bikers heading up near the summit (sort of) while we were descending. It didn't look easy but later we would meet again. It took them a while to climb up but only a few minutes to come down and be out of the TH.
First snowboarders at Dana; then bikers on WMP.... I wonder why I had to hike... XD
BTW, the summit registry had the most - all sorts of- junks that I've ever seen. It was big, too. Not until a couple of days later while I was viewing the photos taken on this hike, would I realized that I had signed the registry w/o my name. Doh! Oh well... one reason to go back...

Road still open!
Walked up the jeep road. It was a bit of a chore, since there was a lot of drifted snow, and I had heavy boots on to keep my feet warm. High temp of the day was 23F. 15F on the summit and windy. Didn't see a soul all day.
DAMN!! And we went to slog on the west side of 395 on Sunday! I'll bet it WAS windy up there. Good for you Steve.

Jeep Road
Saturday, Dec 16th 2006: Road was blocked at the intersection of Patriarch Grove road with White Mountain Road. Slept inside Tina's truck. Windy with 6" to 8" of snow overnight.
Sunday, Dec 17th 2006: It was 1 deg F around 6:30am. Started hiking at 8:30am (3 deg F) from Patriarch Grove intersection. Took a cross-country route passing north of Sheep Mountain. Got to the regular summer locked-gate trailhead around 11:00am. Rested there for 15 minutes. Continued on and reached the Barcroft Research Station (12,500') an hour later. Decided to call it a day here. Back to Tina's truck by 3:20pm (still 3 deg F at 3:30pm). Drove in 4WD out with 6-8" of fresh snow with the occasional 1-foot snow spin drift. Found that the USFS locked us at the Sierra View gate; luckly, they used a bungee cord to lock the gate and not a padlock. Closed call! So, currently, White Mtn Road is locked at Sierra View. Tina's TR.

Drove to the locked gate the previous evening. Thinking of laying out and sleeping under the stars.....didn't happen. Way too cold. I slept inside my car. Temperature next morning: 16 degress F. Brrr....brrr....COLD. Waited for the partial sun to warm up something. Started riding my bike at 8:15AM from the locked gate. Passed the Barcroft Research station (8:45AM). Ditched my mtn bike around 13,000' as I couldn't ride in the snow drifts. Got to the summit at 11:00AM. Stayed there only 15 minutes. Stopped just below the observatory for a side trip to Mount Barcroft (13,040'), reaching its summit at 1:00PM. Quick ride down from the Barcroft Research station to the locked gate: 6 minutes. Back at my car at 1:30PM. Rested, ate and put bike away. Drove down and decided to take another side trip to summit Sheep Mountain (12,497'), 3:00PM. Back to the car at 3:30PM. Eating pizza by 5:30PM at Bishop's Pizza Factory.

Steven Sauter and I rode our mountain bikes from the locked gate (elev : 11,680') to the large saddle just before the slope to the summit (about a 5 1/2 mile ride). We cached our bikes just before the saddle area. We spent 40 minutes on the summit: resting, eating, taking pictures and talking to a service man who works for WMRS (he came up to the summit on one of the WMRS Toyota 4x4 trucks). The previous night we had thunderstorms that started at 10:00pm and lasted some hours into the night. So, on the way down from the summit, we heard thunder clouds again. That made us hike down faster and get to our bikes right away for a quick descent. Hail started coming down as we passed by the Barcroft Research lab. The fast ride down was very fun, despite getting hit with hail from Barcroft down to the locked gate. Driving out from the gate we passed through the heart of the thunderstorm: marble-sized white hail covered the surrounding mountain slopes making it appear as snow.

After hiking to Boundary Peak on Saturday 6/29/02, mdostby and I stopped at the Sizzler's in Bishop to treat ourselves with plenty of food. Then, we headed towards the Locked Gate. Got to the locked gate around 7:00pm and then we spent the next hour putting up chicken wire below my car's engine to protect it from the marmots. Slept under the stars at the locked gate parking area. Woke up by 5:00am and started walking at 5:30am. Within 1000' of elevation gain left, I decided to head straight up through class 2 rock. Got to the summit at 9:11am. Next time I do this mountain I'm going to mountain bike it most of the way.

Standard Route
I left my wife in a motel in the valley, drove up, hiked to the summit, and was back to the motel in plenty of time for dinner. Great hike, FANTASTIC views of the Sierra's
This was our highest peak so far. For me (49 years old)it was the next level up from my previous high Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park. For my 23 year old newly minted Marine it was his highest by about 4,000 feet. The weather was overcast most of the day and we only spent about 15 minutes at the summit because Mr. Thunder was announcing his presence. Great hike, hard to get used to the altitude especially when you live in Rochester, NY with an average height of about 200 feet. Next year, the big one, Mt. Whitney!
Wow, what a great peak to climb! I climbed this peak with my friends Duane, Andy, Cheryl, and 4wheelbob who hikes in a wheelchair and is attempting White Mountain Peak for the 4th time. Not sure if he made it to the top since I had to come back earlier than the rest. But when I left him he had made it further than he had before. The view from the top was obscured by haze - lots of smoke coming up from fires down south. But the hike was a good one and very rewarding. I grew up in Bishop and always loved the view looking up to the peak and now I can say I've looked down from it as well.
