Switchback road?  Sucess!

JUL 19TH 2009
Hiked the road from the Barcroft gate; this must be the most indirect way to get to a summit; holy switchback! Well, guess it's a road and not a trail. Either way, nice hike! A bit tough coming down since we were breathing in smoke from the Bishop Creek fires. Lots of thunderstorm activity as well; we had the first rumbling at 1:30pm but luckily got back to the car by 2:30pm. A lot of people still behind us though; hope they made it safely because there was quite a lightning show on the drive out.

OCT 7TH 2006
Jeep Road - Great start with horrible end

Went up on Saturday (Oct 7th). Snow started about halfway between the observatory and the switchbacks. Some parts of the road probably have a foot of snow. It started snowing pretty heavily and we turned around just before the switchbacks as we got worried the truck might get snowed in (only 2wd). The snow was almost all the way to the trailhead, then there was a break and then another part of the road had a good layer. It was about 23 degrees at the trailhead at 4pm.

Then the trouble began. Made it past the snow but had TWO flat tires at about 10k. About 6 hours later we were towed back to Bishop. 10:30pm, no car, still no food and not one single motel room available. Finally made it to Mammoth with a shuttle to get a room around 1:30am. "Fun" day. Got back home Sunday 8pm, a day late. I was pretty annoyed.

Re: Switchback road?

I was in one of the groups well behind you, everyone made it out but true the lightning did get fairly interesting as the day went on. One boomed pretty close just as we crossed the ridge and started down to the Barcroft facility.

White Mtn  Sucess!

Nice hike for the elevation. Far more flauna than I expected: penstemon, desert marigold, and of course more sagebrush than you can shake a stick at. Drove down Silver Canyon Road - hubba hubba!

Independence Day  Sucess!

What a way to celebrate. This was a hard one for me. The vertical seemed so much harder at this altitude, but prevailed, and checked this bad boy off the list.

Lame  Sucess!

Ticked it but just for the list. Stopping and hiking off the road before the end was way cooler.

First 14er  Sucess!

First attempt at a 14er at the age of 12. Hike up to the Observatory was fine but weather worsened and make the walk along the ridge line more treacherous because of the high exposure. The Clouds eventually passed and we were able to finish the climb. Only saw 3 other people on the trail. Made summit at about sunset time, with an amazing view of the Sierra Crest. Walked back to the light of the full moon. Excellent trip to take the younger kids on seeing as how there's fairly easy access and a road the entire way. Good hike overall, I've always loved the White Mountains.

First 14er!  Sucess!

Took the South Face route. The drive in was very long and bumpy! Awesome terrain and cool colors though. I got a late start so I was coming down when the sun was low, which was actually very nice because the marmots started to come out of hiding. It was fun to watch them.

nevada highpoint?  Sucess!

kinda boring hike up - the old road sure does a lot of winding - great views from the top though - a bit hazy, but the views of the palisades were divine - I ran straight down via mount barcroft - that was fun

One more 14er. A very strange landscape. Wish I had more time to explore.

Colder than we thought in September  Sucess!

Fairly easy hike as long as you acclimatize for a day. Seeing the Bristlecone Pine Forest is a must while you are there.

Had to bail!

I tried it a couple of years ago with my buddy Richard in October and we had to bail because of a pretty bad snow storm. We were already pretty high up (just before the final ascent to the summit) when we saw the storm coming in and decided to bail. It started to snow by the time we were at the research station and be the time we reached the car it was snowing really bad (a couple of inches in 15min). Temperatures had dropped into the 10's, really cold and windy. But it was still a lot of fun and will return one day to summit.

One Long Walk  Sucess!

Hiked up from the Barcroft gate. Nice breeze, so not too hot. Pretty desolate, though great views of the Sierras throughout the hike. My friend and I had the summit to ourselves (it was a Thursday). Saw three others on their way up as we headed down.

Summer Solitude  Sucess!

Solo climbed from the Barcroft gate on the dirt road. Very sunny comfortable morning climb with great views north to Mt. Dana and south along the High Sierra. Took about 6 hours round trip.

Main Trail  Sucess!

A family affair. We took advantage of the open gates on the last day of a two week vacation. My second time up, my wifes first time (her second 14'er). My daughter (age 5) hiked to the summit on her own for her first 14'er, and my son (age 2) got a ride all the way on my back for his first ever peak.
