When I was snowshoeing in the Clearwater
Wilderness north of Mount Rainier, I came
across several of these birds in winter.
They were part-way "buried" in the snow,
and just their heads were sticking out.
I think they were using the snow for
insulation & protection, as it was pretty
cold and there were foxes and martins in
the area. Beautiful bird, SteveO !!!

Nice shotI almost stepped on a few of those too when hiking in the Rockies. I assume they change their feather color for the summer, don't they?
