You don't read wrong. What's going on is pretty hideous. Almost beyond description. This mountain could have been, and should have been, the centerpiece for a national park. This entire area has more natural beauty than can almost be believed. However, MUCH of the land is in private hands and it is being exploited to the maximum benefit of the landowners. Look at my page on Little Green Mountain. That's near Whiteside. 7K acres have been set aside there as nominal wilderness (Duke Power ran a line through the valley, so that's pretty damaging). But even there, you can see survey stakes for private property right up to the National Forest boundary. And you can better believe homes and subdivisions will soon follow.
Thanks. I had intended to get a shot of the mountain from a distance. The best place to do this is on Whiteside Cove Road. However, I was so disturbed by the development there that all I could think of was to get away. So I zipped over to the Panthertown wilderness for some peace and quiet.

It is a beautiful mountain, but be prepared to see that it is surrounded and inundated by rampant development. Houses even on the summit! Houses everywhere you look! It made me ill and I had to get away from there as fast as I could. I'm glad I saw it, but it was depressing to see what it has become.
WOW! I better get there in a hurry before it's all covered over in houses. That's really a shame that those little developements are eating up these beautiful places. Have a good one!

Interesting, also to read about the peregrine falcons. We have a rock face close by, Rotenfels, which has the same limitations: First half of the year no climbing. But it's never too hot to climb around here ;-)
