Day Assault of Whitney and Muir  Sucess!

Windy day assault of Whitney and Muir. Great conditions besides the 40 mph winds. Marginal amount of snow on the 99 switchbacks. Clear day with beautiful views of the Sierras and eastern California. Can't wait to get back!

17 hours to/from Portal

Had I summitted, it'd have been at least 19. Creeks and falls were swollen from recent downpours. Frustrating to see several WAG bags left by the trail. Not nearly as crowded as I expected, though.

Long day hike  Sucess!

This was a non-technical route with no ice or snow (mid July, low snow year). The last water source was about a quarter of the way up the switchbacks.

Beautiful day, beautiful hike  Sucess!

Let me start by saying that if you're considering doing this climb, you should totally go for it! In May, there were still some permits available last minute so I went for it. I was able to get some Diamox, a medication that helps prevent altitude sickness, and that helped a lot. I started at 5:20AM from Whitney Portal, and finished at 8PM. It's a steady climb, and almost completely snow free at the moment. I met lots of cool people and got to stay on the summit mount for about an hour, and hiked down with two new friends. We glissaded (sliding down snow) down from the top of the 99 switchbacks but it ended up taking just as long as hiking down haha. If I go back, I'll try out the Mountaineer's route, it seems like a really good route for beginner's interested in mountaineering skills. Highly recommend the Whitney trail too, some of the most beautiful views I've ever seen!

Fun backpack over 2 days  Sucess!

Packs were way too heavy, but was very straightforward. Was well acclimatized and had no issues with altitude. First 14er!

Mount Whitney Day Hike  Sucess!

Fun 22-mile day hike up to the top of Mount Whitney and back. Felt great the entire hike and no AMS for me, though my wife and her sister both suffered from it and a close friend had to turn back about half way up the mountain.

Easy non-technical hike as long as you are relatively fit. Lakes along the way to fill up your water bottles. Bring some snacks and keep it light. Basic layers and some comfy hiking shoes are all you need. Great views all the way up and back, especially when you reach "the windows".

Weather was perfect, though a storm did approach late in the day. Harmless but looked a little menacing.

Definitely want to go back and do the Mountaineers Trail, as well as some of the technical climbs.

Re: Mount Whitney Day Hike

Sounds like a great day! I have this one on my list to do at some point too. Mountaineer's Route is definitely one I'd like to do as well.

Easy & long  Sucess!

Dry-ish but icy ascending major snow storm on the descent making the trail disappear. Been back a few times off season but never during the season.

Blissful Nov Summit  Sucess!

No snow and perfect weather car to car attempt and the latest summit to date for me at 3:13pm.

Only possible due to the absence of snow and altitude sickness, and a perfect weather.

15.5hrs round trip with 6am start. Always have layers (it was very windy, and listen to your body). The majority of the group had hard time making it down from the summit from being tired and experiencing altitude sickness. It took three hours longer for some due to that.

One Day Trip - Main Trail  Sucess!

One day trip - camped at the Lone Pine campground and hit the trail at 3:15AM. Was up at Trail Camp just after sunrise and at the summit around 9:45AM. Back to the parking lot around 4:30PM. It’s a long, tiring walk, but pretty easy hike otherwise.

Temperature at the summit was around 20 and it was very windy (it was the coldest day of the week by 10 degrees). No snow on the trail, but the section with the cables above the Trail Camp switchbacks had a pretty thick shelf of ice, otherwise the trail was in great shape and easy to navigate – trekking poles were a great help, especially on the descent.

First time hiking Whitney, it was a good trip. Lots of roadwork going on with the main road heading into Whitney Portal (on Highway 395 too) not sure if that happens every year, but be sure to check road conditions.

Never lonely on this trail.   Sucess!

I hiked this trail a few times to access summits such as Mts. Whitney, Muir, Mcadie & Irvine. It is one of the easiest and most maintained trail in the area.

Round 2  Sucess!

After summiting via the Mountaineer's Route in 2013, this was a pleasant experience of obvious trails, high treeline, and many more people on trail. High winds are a factor at Trail Camp and above Trail Crest.

Summitted despite lack of gear.  Sucess!

Our group and a few others summitted that day. We had poles but no axes or crampons, no problems though.
