1. Did she eat the gouda cheese?
2. If she wanted to hike out then why not just hike out? There is no obligation to call in SAR... especially given we now know they lack basic competence. Well lesson learned!
3. So you stole someone's tent? lol
1. Yes. “She liked anything I gave her to drink, to eat and to keep her warm.”
2. When I talked to Sheriff he told me he could not stop me from searching for Charity but I was on my own. However, I agreed to notify them if I find her and I did. Before the helicopters arrived I considered that option, especially because it was getting dark and they don’t work at night. However, once two helicopters appeared we had no chance to walk down. “Suddenly the helicopter got so low near us, it basically knocked us to the ground.” Why they took her? You need to ask them.
3. I gave them a favor carrying down their tent. I was in touch with Heather, the owner of this tent. Sheriff and Rangers had my info too, so I would not be able to hide anywhere, perhaps, except on Mt Shasta. :)
Sometimes someone who is intimately familiar with an area will have more insight on where someone may be lost. Also if you had met someone beforehand it might give you clues about their capabilities among other things.
Nice job, and thanks for writing it up and posting.
Your side of this incident is nicely detailed and I enjoyed reading it, but I'd love to hear the story from Charity's POV as well. I wonder if that will ever happen. I think there're a lot of mysterious circumstances and unanswered questions that only she could provide.
You are a true hero, in a time where we abuse that word to a point where most people have forgotten what it should mean!
I am glad that everything worked out well in this story. Searches on mountains are very difficult and after 24h, the odds start moving towards body recoveries. With a mountain as big as Shasta, everything is a challenge for SAR groups. Managing logistics and communications is an overwhelming task, so give the other people in the story lots of slack for sub-optimal communication with you. Focus on the many positives, like you saved her life because you were determined to be a true hero, and let go of any negative aspects of the incident.
Came here to find a late summer trip report on which route to take with less snowpack on the mountain, ended up spending hours reading about your story instead. What an incredible experience you were part of!

Re: Good ending to a possible tragedyI’m not a hero, just a mountaineer. In fact,

Don’t put the blame on me...”
